AM Ghazanfar for Mumbai Indians [Source: Instagram]
Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, are about to face Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026, marking the start of a new era. In the playing XI featuring Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya among others, 20-year-old Afghan off-spinner AM Ghazanfar makes his long-awaited IPL debut.
Bought by MI for ₹4.80 crore in the 2025 mega auction and retained at the same price ahead of 2026, AM Ghazanfar was seen as a high-upside investment in a young mystery spinner who could transform middle-overs control.
The Ghazanfar Prospect In Mumbai Indians
After missing the entire 2025 season due to injury, the Kabul-raised talent is finally ready to showcase why franchises fought over him, and why he could emerge as MI’s shining prospect in a spin-starved lineup.
Ghazanfar is no ordinary newbie. At just 20, the right-arm off-spinner brings a rare blend of bounce, carrom-ball variations, and sharp turn that has already drawn comparisons to Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Ravichandran Ashwin.
That potential was spectacularly realised just 17 months ago in Sharjah. On November 6, 2024, in the 1st ODI against Bangladesh, AM Ghazanfar delivered a magnificent spell that will be one of the greatest Afghanistan will ever see.
The Magical 6-Fer That Spoke Dominance With The Ball
Afghanistan had posted 235, built around Mohammad Nabi’s explosive 84 and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s patient 52, despite early blows from Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman.
Bangladesh, chasing 236, looked comfortable at 120/2 in the 26th over with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (47) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (28) steadying the ship. Eight wickets in hand and 118 runs needed, the game was theirs to lose.

Yet, Mohammad Nabi set the trap, leaving square leg vacant and adding a second slip for Shanto. The captain swept a length ball and edged to Shahidi at short fine leg.
That 55-run stand was broken. Five overs later, in the 31st, AM Ghazanfar struck again: Azmatullah Omarzai produced a stunning diving catch at short fine leg to remove Mehidy. The switch had been flicked.
Match-Winning Spell From The Afghan Wonder
In the 33rd over alone, Ghazanfar produced magic with carrom balls. Mushfiqur Rahim was stumped, Rishad Hossain was trapped lbw, and Taskin Ahmed bowled, three wickets in one over off successive deliveries.
Rashid Khan had already cleaned up Mahmudullah with a googly moments earlier. From 120/2, Bangladesh collapsed to 8/23, bowled out for 143 in 34.3 overs. Ghazanfar finished with career-best figures of 6/26 in 6.3 overs, including the final blow to Shoriful Islam.
Earlier, Ghazanfar had bowled opener Tanzid Hasan in the fourth over. Rashid picked up two more, but it was Ghazanfar’s spell that turned a promising chase into a 92-run rout.
AM Ghazanfar’s variations, the carrom ball that skids and the one that grips and turns. exposed Bangladesh’s lower order.
For the unaware, born on March 20, 2006, in Paktia Province and raised in Kabul, Ghazanfar started as a fast bowler before switching to off-spin during the Covid lockdown.
Under the guidance of former Afghanistan captain Dawlat Ahmadzai, he honed his craft. In 2024, he shone in the U-19 T20 World Cup and guided Afghanistan A to the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup title, earning Player of the Match in the final.
Ghazanfar, A Steal Deal For Mumbai Indians In IPL 2026
For the Mumbai Indians, AM Ghazanfar’s inclusion today strengthens the side in multiple ways. The spin department now has dual threats, Markande’s wrist-spin and Ghazanfar’s finger-spin, offering variety against KKR’s potent batting order.
In the middle overs, where MI have sometimes leaked runs, Ghazanfar’s economy and wicket-taking threat provide the control Hardik Pandya craves.
When paired with Bumrah’s yorkers and Boult’s swing, the attack becomes balanced and adaptable across phases. More than that, the 20-year-old brings fearless energy to a dressing room packed with legends. Growing alongside Rohit, Bumrah, and Hardik, AM Ghazanfar could accelerate his potential into a long-term franchise pillar.
