In a remarkable turn of events in IPL 2026, former India U19 World Cup hero Ajitesh Argal took to the field as an umpire for the first time. The 2008 U19 World Cup standout made his debut in Match 32 of ongoing IPL 2026.

Ajitesh Argal, the pacer who was named Player of the Match in the 2008 U-19 World Cup final, made a historic shift from player to umpire. He starred in that memorable final, taking 2 wickets for 7 runs in a rain-affected win.

Eighteen years later, Argal returned to a stage like the IPL, but this time not as a player, but as an umpire, making his debut in LSG vs Rajasthan Royals clash at Lucknow. His remarkable journey from being a match hero in Malaysia to IPL umpiring showcases the evolution of his cricketing career.

From U-19 World Cup Hero to Cricket Umpire - Virat Kohli’s Teammate Makes a New Mark

Ajitesh Argal, once a bright young prospect alongside Virat Kohli in India’s 2008 U19 World Cup squad, has taken an unexpected yet inspiring turn in his career. After a promising start, Argal drifted away from professional cricket, but his love for the game never faded.

Following years of involvement in cricket, Argal decided to step into the world of umpiring. In 2023, he passed the BCCI’s umpiring exams and began officiating in domestic competitions, including the prestigious Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

His umpiring journey has continued to flourish, with Argal recently officiating during the India A vs Australia A ODI series in Kanpur. He also officiated in the WPL 2026, further solidifying his growing reputation in the cricketing world.

Ajitesh Argal: From IPL Frustration to Umpire Success at the World’s Biggest League

Ajitesh Argal’s career in the IPL was marred by missed opportunities. Despite his stellar performance in the 2008 U19 World Cup final, where he won the Player of the Match, he was picked by Kings XI Punjab but never got a chance to play.

Despite not getting a chance in the IPL, Argal continued his cricketing career in domestic circles. Born in Bhopal, Ajitesh played his age-group cricket for Madhya Pradesh before making his senior debut for Baroda.

Between 2011 and 2015, Argal played 10 first-class matches, six T20s, and three List A games, taking 29 wickets. Known for his accuracy rather than pace, he consistently troubled batters with his tight line, but a breakthrough never came.

While Ajitesh Argal’s career never reached the expected heights after his U19 World Cup heroics, his passion for cricket remained strong. He transitioned into umpiring, marking a new chapter in his cricketing journey and shifting focus to officiating.

Having officiated in various domestic competitions, Argal now stands as an umpire in IPL 2026. It's a remarkable turn of events for the former pacer, who now takes the same prestigious stage he once dreamed of playing on.
