According to a recent report, Mumbai Indians are unlikely to release Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. The Times of India journalist Sahil Malhotra has reported that the star Indian batter is unlikely to leave the franchise for now.
This is important because earlier reports suggested that Mumbai could consider releasing Suryakumar Yadav rather than trading him.
However, the latest update indicates that the franchise currently wants to keep the experienced batter for the upcoming season.

“Yes, he didn’t have a good season last year, but what about the ones before that? MI will not discard a player based on one season, and that’s not how they operate. They take pride in the ’One Family’ tag and swear by it,” adds the source as per TOI.
Why Suryakumar Yadav Remains Important For MI?
Suryakumar Yadav has been one of Mumbai Indians' most important players over the years. He has played a crucial role in the team's middle order and has also spent a long time with the franchise.
Although his IPL 2026 campaign was not among his best, Mumbai Indians appear ready to back him. In the last season, the star player featured in 13 matches and managed just 270 runs at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.
Suryakumar has been part of the Mumbai since 2018 and is known for his aggressive batting. He has an extraordinary ability to attack bowlers from the start and can change the momentum of the game single-handedly.
Another factor that makes SKY important for MI is his leadership and experience. He has led Mumbai in 5 matches from 2023-26; however, his winning record may not be in his favour (2 wins, 3 losses), but his leadership for India in T20Is also backs him.
