On Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders hosted Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens for IPL 2026 match 28. The Visitors, batting first, got off to a blistering start, but Varun Chakaravarthy cheered the crowd up as he drew the first blood for the Knight Riders.

Notably, RR, batting first, stitched an 81-run opening stand. Meanwhile, Varun Chakaravarthy got rid of the dangerous man Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the fourth ball of his first over. The right-arm spinner bowled a fuller-length googly that the southpaw looked to hit away with a wild slog. However, he fell into the trap and returned to the pavilion after scoring 46 (28).

Varun Chakaravarthy Completes 200 T20 Wickets

It was a special wicket for the KKR spinner as he completed 200 T20 scalps with Sooryavanshi’s dismissal. Notably, Varun Chakaravarthy also became the fastest India spinner to reach this feat. He beat Kuldeep Yadav’s record and took five matches fewer than the DC star to 200 T20 wickets.

Notably, Varun Chakaravarthy took his 200th T20 wicket in 155 innings, while Kuldeep Yadav achieved the same in 160 innings. Overall, Arshdeep Singh is still the fastest to 200 T20 wickets, a feat he completed in 151 matches.

Varun Chakaravarthy Regains Form After Injury Setback

It has been a roller-coaster of last couple of months for Varun Chakaravarthy. Notably, the India spinner, who is ahead of everyone in the pecking order finished T20 World Cup 2026 as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets.

However, Varun picked 9 of those wickets in the first four matches. In the rest and crucial matches, the 34-year-old struggled and also leaked runs.

Further, he got off to the worst possible start in IPL 2026 and went wicketless in first three matches. He then picked up an injury and missed a couple of games. Since his return, the right-arm spinner has taken 4 wickets in two matches.

Varun Chakaravarthy Scripts More Special Records For KKR

In the ongoing match against RR, Varun Chakaravarthy completed 200 T20 wickets. However, in KKR's previous match against GT, the 34-year-old also completed 100 IPL wickets for the Knight Riders.

With Jos Buttler’s wicket, Varun Chakaravarthy completed 100 wickets for KKR in IPL. He became the first-ever Indian to reach 100 scalps for the three-time winners. Overall, Varun is the 3rd bowler to take 100 wickets for KKR, only behind Sunil Narine and Andre Russell.

Notably, Varun achieved the feat in just 86 innings. He has an economy of 7.65, good enough to put him among the very best in the history of the cash-studded league.
