Shubman Gill has broken a huge captaincy record previously held by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for India. This happened after India defeated Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series, with this game being played in Galle.
With this win, India has kept their hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC 2027) finals alive. India needed to win all of their remaining matches to play in the summit clash, having missed the previous final in 2022. India played in the final of the first two WTC finals in 2021 and 2023, losing to New Zealand and Australia, respectively.
Shubman Gill records his 6th win in his first 10 Tests as India captain
The Indian team has made 462 runs thanks to 167 runs by Devdutt Padikkal and 82 by KL Rahul. In response, Sri Lanka managed 284 runs with Sonal Dinusha scoring 100 runs, while Manav Suthar took four wickets and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets
India then made 193 runs, with Rishabh Pant scoring a breezy fifty, and set Sri Lanka 372 runs to win the game. In response, Dinusha made 84, and Dhananjaya de Silva made 59. However, Manav Suthar picked 6/55 as Sri Lanka was bowled out for 206 runs, and India won by 165 runs.
This was Shubman Gill’s sixth win in his first 10 Tests as India captain. Notably, Shubman Gill had become India's captain in the England Test series in 2025 and won two Tests in the series. He then won the West Indies series 2-0 and defeated Afghanistan in the one-off Test.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were left behind by Shubman Gill in Test captaincy
The sixth win by Shubman Gill as India Test captain in his first 10 matches put him in second spot in the list of Indian captains with the most Test wins in the first 10 games. He left behind the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who both won 5 matches each as India captain in his first 10 matches.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill equalled the record of Sourav Ganguly, who won 6 Tests out of his first ten games as India Test captain. Notably, Ganguly made his India Test captaincy debut against Bangladesh in 2000.
The record for most wins as an Indian Test captain in the first 10 games is held by the great MS Dhoni, who won 7 matches. Dhoni had taken over as India Test captain in 2008 against South Africa in an interim capacity before taking over as full-time captain from Anil Kumble against Australia the same year.
India looking for a clean sweep against Sri Lanka
India earned a huge boost to their WTC 2027 points, which jumped 53.55 percentage points after winning the first test against Sri Lanka at Galle on August 19, 2026. This win is extremely important for India, as they have limited opportunities to stake a claim for the WTC final.
India will play the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo’s SSC Ground from August 23 onwards. Then India will fly down to New Zealand for a two-Test series and a white-ball series. India will then host Australia at home in 2027 for a five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy series.
