India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2026 had a massive upturn with a commanding victory over the Netherlands at Headingley, Leeds. Electing to bat, India posted a towering total before a disciplined bowling performance sealed a comprehensive win.
Shafali Verma emerged as the architect of this win, delivering a rare all-round display that blended power hitting with impressive off-spin, something that she is known for. Her knock of 55 runs and a bowling return of three for 20 placed her in an elite group to make a historic record.
Shafali Verma Heroics In The IND vs NED Match
Shafali walked out to open the innings with characteristic intent alongside Smriti Mandhana and immediately put the Netherlands bowlers under pressure. Her 55 came off just 38 balls, studded with seven fours and two sixes.
The innings built a solid platform alongside Smriti, as the pair added 115 runs for the first wicket and allowed the middle order to capitalise.
When India turned to the ball, Verma’s off-spin proved equally damaging. She struck at important moments, breaking a promising stand and then mopping up the tail. Her figures of 3.2-0-20-3 reflected the promise that India is currently searching for in an all-rounder.
Shafali Verma Joins Elite List In World Cup
Shafali’s outing against the Netherlands placed her in a very exclusive club. She is only the third cricketer to record a fifty and three or more wickets in the same women’s T20 World Cup fixture.
The first to achieve this rare double was West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews. In the 2018 edition at Gros Islet, Matthews blazed 62 runs from 36 deliveries against Sri Lanka and then returned to take three wickets for 16 runs with her off-spin.
The second entry came two years later, in the 2020 World Cup in Canberra. South Africa’s Sune Luus delivered an unbeaten 61 off 41 balls against Thailand, anchoring the innings with maturity.

She then turned the match decisively with her leg-spin, finishing with figures of three for 15. Luus’s effort underlined the value of a multi-skilled player in the shortest format and added her name to a list that would remain frozen for six years.
| Player | Batting | Bowling | Opponent | Year |
| Hayley Matthews | 62 (36) | 3–16 | vs SL (Sri Lanka) | 2018 |
| Sune Luus | 61* (41) | 3–15 | vs THA (Thailand) | 2020 |
| Shafali Verma | 55 (38) | 3–20 | vs NED (Netherlands) | 2026 |
| Fatima Sana | 55* (38) | 3-16 | Vs South Africa | 2026 |
Verma’s name now sits alongside these two accomplished cricketers. Her 55 runs and three wickets for 20 runs against the Netherlands in Leeds replicated the rare combination of batting and bowling impact.
Interestingly, Pakistan women's captain Fatima Sana recreated Shafali's feat against South Africa, as she scored 55 runs and bagged three wickets for 16 runs in the cliffhanger.
How India Dominated Netherlands To Break Multiple Records
India’s dominance began with openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma as they launched a spectacular assault, racing to a 115-run partnership inside 12 overs.
Mandhana played the role of the aggressor-in-chief, crafting a superb 74 from 47 balls with eleven boundaries and a six. Verma matched her stroke for stroke, striking ten fours in her 55-run knock.
The early onslaught left the Netherlands bowling unit searching for answers. Once the openers departed, Jemimah Rodrigues contributed a brisk 19, and Richa Ghosh provided a breathtaking finish.
Her unbeaten 20 came from only eight deliveries, including two sixes, and she was supported by Deepti Sharma’s two-ball 10 featuring a four and a six. The relentless hitting pushed India to 209 for 5, the highest total of the tournament so far.
Netherlands Suffocate Under Pressure
The scoreboard pressure suffocated the Netherlands chase from the outset. Nandani Sharma provided the early breakthroughs, having Heather Siegers caught by Mandhana for 21 and later stumping captain Babette de Leede for 28.
Deepti Sharma chipped in with the wicket of Molkenboer, caught by Rodrigues. The Dutch innings stuttered at 50 for 2 and never recovered. Shafali Verma, introduced as first change, bowled Sterre Kalis for 18 to break a developing partnership. She returned later to clean up the tail.
Eventually, the Netherlands innings folded for 114 in 17.3 overs, handing India a massive 95-run victory. The win was a complete team performance, built on a devastating opening stand, a whirlwind finish with the bat, and a spin quartet that never allowed the Netherlands a foothold.
