Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah and Sediqullah Atal rewrote the record books against Zimbabwe. They registered a record 206-run partnership for the second wicket in the first Test in Sharjah on Saturday in a remarkable batting display.

Both batters scored centuries, as Rahmanullah marked his Test debut with a hundred and Atal continued his form from the Bangladesh series to notch his second Test century in succession.

Zimbabwe had posted 504 in their first innings before Afghanistan lost opener Abdul Malik for just two. Rahmanullah then joined Atal in the third session on Day 2, with the hosts needing a partnership to recover in reply.

The pair steadily rebuilt the innings and carried Afghanistan through the remainder of Day 2 without another setback. They then dominated the first session on Day 3, frustrating Zimbabwe’s bowlers and adding valuable runs without losing a wicket.

Rahmanullah brought up his maiden Test hundred on debut, eventually scoring 113 off 188 deliveries. Atal, who had scored a century in the previous Test against Bangladesh, reached his second Test hundred, making 105 off 213 balls overall.

Their 206-run stand ended shortly after lunch when Atal was dismissed for 105. It surpassed Afghanistan’s previous best second-wicket partnership of 139, shared by Ihsanullah and Rahmat Shah against Ireland in Dehradun in 2019.
