Bangladesh off-spinner Nayeem Hasan entered the history books for Bangladesh during the first Test match in Dhaka against the West Indies.
As the 26-year-old spinner was the pick of the bowlers for the Tigers, his four-wicket haul was the prime reason behind the Windies' collapse from 213/5 to 245 all out.
Nayeem Hasan surpasses Mehidy Miraz, becomes fastest to 50 wickets for Bangladesh
Nayeem Hasan’s top wicket was getting the number of Justin Greaves, who was batting on 46 when the off-break bowler trapped him in front of the sticks.
His next wicket was the milestone-breaking one, as he completed his 50 Test wickets with Shamar Joseph’s scalp.
As a result, he became the fastest to 50 Test wickets for Bangladesh in terms of deliveries taken, reaching the milestone after bowling just 2,856 deliveries in the longest format. The national record was previously held by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who had taken 3,458 balls to complete 50 Test wickets.
Meanwhile, Mehidy reached 50 Test wickets faster in terms of matches, completing the milestone in his 13th match. In contrast, Nayeem is playing his 16th Test in the BAN vs WI 1st Test.
However, Nayeem, who played the majority of his matches at home, has a better strike rate: 55.0 after 28 innings, as compared to Mehidy’s 62.2 after 108 innings.
In the overall list, former Australian pacer Charlie Turner is the quickest to 50 wickets, reaching the milestone in just six matches.
Dhaka's fourth-innings record puts Bangladesh under pressure
In the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and West Indies, the hosts took a slim 27-run lead after the end of two innings, thanks to the spinners, who shared eight wickets between them, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam bagging two scalps apiece.
The home team is back in the middle at the end of second session on Day 3.
Although they have lost four wickets already, they will need to bat smartly as the venue is not a good hunting ground for a fourth-innings chase. The highest total chased down in Dhaka is 209 runs, by England in 2010.
