The decision to promote Jacob Bethell as an ODI opener finally paid off in the third game of the series as Bethell, alongside Ben Duckett, tormented the Jasprit Bumrah-less Indian bowlers to register their names in history books.

England won the toss, and they elected to bat first, and the decision paid dividends as the Indian attack struggled to get a breakthrough, and allowed the Bethell-Duckett pair to cross the 100-run mark as an opening pair.

The pair became the first England opening combination to register a 100-plus opening partnership against India across formats at Lord's in 36 years. Moreover, when the pair breached the 135-run opening stand, they created a world record in ODIs.

Highest opening stand in ODIs at Lord's

When Duckett took a single off Gurnoor Brar in the 22nd over, he took England’s score to 136 for the loss of no wickets, and in the process, the English opening pair of Duckett and Bethell created history at Lord’s.

The 192-run score is now the highest opening partnership registered in an ODI at Lord’s. The duo have gone past the previous record holders, Geoff Boycott and Peter Willey (135 runs vs West Indies, 1980).

Both Duckett, Bethell score fifties to end England's unwanted feat

Interestingly, this has only been the second instance of both England openers scoring 50-plus in the same ODI since the 2023 ODI World Cup. The previous occasion came against West Indies at The Oval last year, when Ben Duckett (58) and Jamie Smith (64) achieved the feat.

Ever since Jason Roy was removed from the team and Jonny Bairstow has lost his place, the England team has tried a plethora of opening combinations, and none have worked as England openers have generally struggled in the last few years.
