South Africa are set to take on Namibia in the first ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday, September 9. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM IST at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.

The fixture will mark the first-ever ODI meeting between South Africa and Namibia, adding immense significance to the series opener. With both sides preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, South Africa are expected to field a strong playing XI for the historic clash.

South Africa vs Namibia 1st ODI Preview

South Africa have not played an ODI since December 2025, when they lost to India in an away series. Their current squad is completely different, with Bjorn Fortuin leading a second-string side that remains formidable despite missing several first-choice players.

South Africa have never faced Namibia in an ODI, making this a historic series opener. The Proteas will look to settle quickly and take an early 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Here is South Africa’s predicted XI for the first ODI vs Namibia.

Openers and Top Order– Jordan Hermann, Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke

Jordan Hermann is expected to make his ODI debut at the top of the order. The left-hander has an impressive List A record, averaging 42.03 with 1,093 runs, and will be eager to make an immediate impact for South Africa.

Tony de Zorzi brings valuable experience to the opening combination, having already played 22 ODIs and scoring 705 runs with the help of a hundred and two fifties.

Matthew Breetzke is expected at No. 3 after replacing the injured Lhuan-dre Pretorius in the squad. He averages 64.18 in ODIs, with six fifties and a century, forming a solid South Africa predicted XI vs Namibia in the first ODI.

Middle-order and Allrounders – Dewald Brevis, Rubin Hermann, Connor Esterhuizen, Corbin Bosch

Dewald Brevis will be one of the key middle-order batters for South Africa, with the youngster coming off a good Namibia T20I tri-series. He will also have a point to prove after missing out on South Africa's ODI squad for the series against Australia. In nine ODIs, Brevis has struck 230 runs at a strike rate of 143.8.

Rubin Hermann has played one ODI so far and is expected to bat at 5. His List-A record speaks for itself, with the left-hander averaging 48.28 with six centuries.

Connor Esterhuizen could make his debut and bat at No. 6, likely alongside wicketkeeping duties. In 16 List-A matches, Esterhuizen has scored 384 runs at an average of 42.66. He recently struck 126 runs at a blistering strike rate of 172.60 in the T20I tri-series.

Corbin Bosch adds valuable experience and depth to the middle-order. The allrounder could be crucial on Namibia’s surfaces, offering wicket-taking ability through the middle overs and death bowling, while also providing useful runs with the bat.

Bowlers – Bjorn Fortuin, Duan Jansen, Kwena Maphaka, Prenelan Subrayen

Bjorn Fortuin will lead South Africa’s spin attack and will be crucial in controlling the tempo in the middle overs. The left-arm spinner has an impressive ODI record, with 18 wickets in 16 matches at an economy rate of 4.83.

Duan Jansen is expected to take the new ball on his ODI debut after an excellent domestic season. He claimed 16 wickets in South Africa’s domestic one-day competition, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker.

Kwena Maphaka, who has played three ODIs, will be eager to showcase his potential in the series. His extra pace could prove valuable against Namibia’s batters.

Meanwhile, Prenelan Subrayen provides a second spin option alongside Fortuin in South Africa’s predicted XI vs Namibia for the first ODI.
