The series is particularly significant because India A’s squad features players who remain close to the national-team picture, while others are trying to break into it. For some, it could determine whether their India ambitions remain alive, while for some, it is an audition for the big stage. Here are those who enter the series with considerably different stakes attached to their performances.1. Ruturaj GaikwadFor Ruturaj Gaikwad, the India A series against Australia A arrives at a particularly uncomfortable point in his career. His domestic record makes it difficult to question his ability as a batter, but international cricket is increasingly becoming a conversation about opportunities that Gaikwad is no longer receiving rather than the ones he is getting.Gaikwad has amassed 5,334 runs in 104 List A matches at an outstanding average of 58.61, including 21 centuries and 20 fifties. Yet that dominance has translated into only nine ODI appearances for India with the last one being played in 2025.Gaikwad has not exactly been given a long runway by the BCCI at the international level. His limited opportunities have also been interspersed with periods outside the India setup, meaning he has struggled to establish the kind of continuity that can turn potential into a permanent place. His recent India A ODI campaign in Sri Lanka should offer some encouragement. He scored 274 runs in five innings at 54.80, including a century against Sri Lanka A and a 66 against Afghanistan A. Rajat PatidarRajat Patidar’s case is a curious one because, unlike Gaikwad, his strongest argument for India has traditionally come from red-ball cricket. With 5,526 runs in 78 first-class matches at an average of 43.51, including 16 centuries and 27 fifties, Patidar has built a good record. However, Patidar has played only three Tests for India, with his last appearance coming in February 2024. His international ODI exposure has been even thinner. Just one match, against South Africa in December 2023. His recent numbers have hardly strengthened that case. In the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Patidar managed 67 runs from two innings, while his latest Duleep Trophy campaign for Central Zone ended with scores of 12 and 5 in the semi-final. That leaves him with just 17 runs from two innings in his most recent red-ball outing.That makes the Australia A ODIs a massive opportunity. Patidar now needs to produce the kind of decisive performances on home ground that force selectors to reconsider his name in the longest format of the game.3. Yash ThakurYash Thakur’s is trying to create one chance for himself almost out of nowhere. For the unaware, Thakur received a surprise India call-up after Harshit Rana was ruled out of the Afghanistan T20I series and the 2026 Asian Games following a rectus femoris strain suffered during a match simulation. The 27-year-old Vidarbha pacer had already made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in July, taking four wickets in his first two international appearances.Now, the Australia A ODIs could give him another route into the national setup. Thakur’s numbers suggest that he is not merely a short-term replacement. He has taken 90 wickets in 57 List A matches at an average of 27.01, with five five-wicket hauls.He also picked up five wickets in three innings during India A’s red-ball series against Sri Lanka A, before claiming four wickets in two T20Is against Zimbabwe. In the Duleep Trophy semi-final, he added four wickets across two innings.His ODI numbers in the Sri Lanka A tri-series were mixed but contained a glimpse of what he can offer, with five wickets in three games, including 3/45 in the final.That is why this Australia A series could be a completely different kind of opportunity for Thakur. The T20I call-up has already put his name inside the selectors’ field of vision.
