The stage is set for a riveting white-ball series as the hosts, England, will collide against a strong Indian side, with the T20Is taking place first. Chester-le-Street in Durham will host the first IND Vs ENG T20I game as both sides will aim to start the tour on a high.

Interestingly, both England and India are heading into the T20I on the back of series losses. India were humiliated by Ireland in the two-match T20I series, while New Zealand hammered England 2-1 in three Test matches.

For the 20-over format, England has a completely different team, and at home, the Three Lions will be the slight favourites against an underperforming Indian side. However, India are the defending World champions, and England shouldn’t take them lightly.

Ahead of the riveting IND Vs ENG 1st T20I, we take a look at England’s predicted playing XI that can beat India.

England playing XI Vs India, 1st T20I, 2026

Openers and top order: Jos Buttler(wk), Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell

England’s dangerous opening pair of Jos Buttler and Phil Salt failed to deliver the goods in the T20 World Cup, but the management have once again shown faith in them, and they are once again set to open in the first T20I against India.

When on song, there is no opening pair better than Buttler-Salt, and if they survive the power play, the Indian bowlers will have a tough day ahead.

At number 3, England will unleash their star boy, Jacob Bethell. He performed poorly for RCB in the IPL 2026, but Bethell was England’s star in the T20 World Cup, smashing a century against India in the semis.

Middle order and all-rounders: Harry Brook(c), Tom Banton, Will Jacks, Sam Curran

The Three Lions certainly possess a strong middle-order, with captain Harry Brook leading the charge at number 4. Ever since getting the captaincy, Brook has scored truckloads of runs for the side, and he’ll be eager to continue the run against India on Wednesday.

Will Jacks was the MVP of the T20 World Cup 2026, and he, perhaps, will be India’s biggest threat as Jacks can score runs in the middle-overs and can also chip in with wickets with his off-break bowling.

For some reason, the hosts have shown faith in Tom Banton. He plays spin well, and the right-handed player will be tasked to tackle the famed Indian spinners in the IND Vs ENG, 1st T20I. There is a good reason to include RCB batter, Jordan Cox in the playing XI, but at least for the first T20I, England might not make too many changes.

There is also Sam Curran in the ranks, as England have two designated finishers in Jacks and Curran. Moreover, the all-rounder can also deliver the goods against India with his left-arm medium pace bowling.

Bowlers: Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood

Apart from Jacks, England will also field two more spinners in Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid. Rashid will be the biggest threat for the Indian batters, as the leg-break bowler has scalped 16 wickets against them, and he possesses an excellent record against India at home.

Jofra Archer will be the leader of the English pace attack. He was superb for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and Archer will be eager to continue the same performance in the IND Vs ENG 1st T20I. Alongside him, Luke Wood is likely to be the second pacer in the playing XI.
