Babar Azam scored a fighting half-century in Pakistan’s tense chase against West Indies on Day 4 of the series-opening first Test. Batting at number three, the legendary top-order batter led Pakistan’s defiance while batting with the tail.
Interestingly, at one stage of his innings, the cricketer even received timely assistance from a certain West Indies fielder. The incident occurred in the final ball of the 31st over of the second Pakistan innings on Day 4 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
Jayden Seales serves Babar Azam a boundary on a platter
A well-set Babar Azam was joined by Pakistan’s number 11 Mohammad Abbas at 71-9 in 28.2 overs. A couple of overs later in the innings, the legendary batter saw off Shamar Joseph’s first four deliveries before dispatching the speedster for a boundary.

In the final ball of the over, the cricketer pulled Shamar in a bid to take a single and retain the strike. However, West Indies fielder Jayden Seales purposely let go of the ball towards the boundary rope, prompting his teammates to have a crack at Pakistan’s number 11 batter the following over.

His tactical move ended up getting backfired for the West Indies team as Abbas got Babar back on strike in just the second ball of the over. Interestingly, it was Jayden Seales himself who bowled the over, all while holding exceptional bowling figures of 4-16 at the time.
Babar Azam wages Pakistan’s lone fight
Babar Azam, batting at number three, made 58* fighting runs off 107 balls. The cricketer struck nine boundaries in his innings, and waged Pakistan’s lone fight in their chase of 211 runs on Day 4. The innings also marked his 32nd half-century in Test cricket.
To put that in wider context, the seasoned right-handed batter aggregated nearly half of Pakistan’s second innings runs, considering the tourists were bundled out for just 120 in 40.2 overs to fall 90 runs short of their target.
Babar’s captaincy return turns nightmare for Pakistan
Earlier this month, Babar Azam was re-appointed as Pakistan’s Test captain at an expense of struggling skipper Shan Masood. Much to everyone’s surprise, several reports indicated that the cricketer only accepted PCB’s late offer if he would also be considered for Pakistan’s captaincy in ODIs and T20Is.
In any case, Babar’s return to captaincy made little-to-no difference to Pakistan’s dwindling Test fortunes, as they have now suffered four straight losses in the format.
Moreover, Pakistan’s PCT also dropped to 6.67 as they continue to languish at the bottom of the 2025-27 ICC WTC points table.
Under his leadership, Pakistan will now take on the West Indies team in the series-deciding second Test later this weekend. The match will be played between August 2 and August 6 and will be hosted by the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
