Led by Ishan Kishan, East Zone are cruising towards a historic victory in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone. After posting a mammoth 708-run total in the first innings, East Zone are on the verge of bundling out South Zone, despite Tilak Varma playing a valiant knock.

With Tilak Varma holding the fort at one end, Smaran Ravichandran, Shreyas Gopal and Chama Milind assisted their skipper to consolidate the South Zone innings. However, after their dismissals, Tripurana Vijay was run out following a disastrous mix-up with Tilak, an incident that not only sank South Zone further but also elated Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

The incident happened in the 102nd over of South Zone's first innings when Tripurana Vijay had just joined Tilak Varma after Chama Milind's dismissal. As Md Kounain Quraishi bowled a good-length delivery outside the off stump, Tilak played a cut shot, with the ball rolling towards Abhijit Sarkar.

The right-arm pacer showed sharp reflexes to collect the ball and fire the throw towards wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan. Although Tilak was initially hesitant for the quick single, Tripurana Vijay seemed confident that he would make it into the striker's end in time.

With Vijay charging down the track, Tilak made up his mind to run towards the non-striker's end. However, as Abhijit Sarkar had swiftly thrown the ball to Ishan Kishan, the East Zone captain dislodged the stumps before Vijay could make his ground.

Thus, the mix-up cost Tripurana Vijay his wicket, as he departed scoring one run off 12 deliveries. The miscommunication, followed by the run-out, elated Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The 15-year-old, fielding at the first slip, danced in jubilation and celebrated the dismissal, while Tilak Varma was visibly upset after the setback.

What made Vaibhav Sooryavanshi celebrate Tripurana Vijay's wicket?

After Ishan Kishan's magnificent double hundred powered them to 708 runs, East Zone had pushed the South Zone onto the back foot by getting five wickets for 174 runs in 53.4 overs. However, with Tilak Varma refusing to give up, Shreyas Gopal and Chama Milind neutralised 147 deliveries combined, keeping the Ishan Kishan-led team at bay.

The East Zone needed a decisive first-innings lead to boost their chances of winning the Duleep Trophy 2026. With time running out, they were in a state of desperation to wrap up the South Zone tail, and Tripurana Vijay's dismissal worked in their favour.

This is the reason why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi passionately celebrated the run-out, as it helped East Zone get one step closer to bundling out the South Zone.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the verge of becoming youngest member of a Duleep Trophy-winning team

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripted history by making his Duleep Trophy debut at 15. He became the youngest to slam a half-century in the tournament's history, scoring a scintillating 92 in the semifinal clash against East Zone.

Riding on a superb effort from their bowlers, including Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar, East Zone restricted South Zone to 336, securing a first innings lead of 372 runs. East Zone are inevitably the favourites to win the contest, and if they clinch the title, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will become the youngest member of a Duleep Trophy-winning team.
