Team India suffered a crushing 76-run defeat to South Africa in match number 43 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The setback has not only left their semi-final aspirations hanging by a thread but also exposed visible cracks within the camp, as tensions flared between two senior members at one stage of the contest.

The incident in question refers to the moment when all-rounder Shivam Dube had a disagreement of some sorts with his captain Suryakumar Yadav at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube argue over field placement

India captain Suryakumar Yadav introduced Shivam Dube into the bowling attack during the 11th over of the South Africa innings in Ahmedabad. At the start of the over, the star all-rounder asked his skipper to put long on a bit straighter and urged the long off to go wider.

Later in the same over, Dewald Brevis muscled Shivam Dube down the ground for a boundary. Looking agitated, the fast bowler expressed his frustration with the updated field placement towards his skipper Suryakumar Yadav. The captain responded back by saying “Tune hi toh bola tha” (the fielding was set by you only).

Shivam Dube and Suryakumar cap day of horror

Shivam Dube ended up leaking 15 runs off his opening over despite bowling to his own field placement. While he got rid of Dewald Brevis in his following over, the speedster leaked another 17 runs off the six deliveries overall to conclude his short two-over spell with dismal figures of 1-32.

With India needing 188 for a win, the cricketer top-scored for India with 42 runs. However, the all-rounder faced 37 deliveries for his runs as India bundled out for just 111 in 18.5 overs. Even captain Suryakumar Yadav struggled to get his timing right in the evening, as the seasoned middle-order batter listed just 18 from 22 balls after his early arrival to the crease.

India loses winning streak with Super 8 defeat

South Africa batted first and charted 187-7 from 20 overs despite slipping to 20-3 at one stage. David Miller bludgeoned 63 runs off 35 balls, and hard-hitting middle-order batters Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs also unleashed cracking 40s.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah unfurled the spell of the high-scoring innings with exceptional figured of 3-15 in his four overs. The speedster struck big in the powerplay itself alongside fellow paceman Arshdeep Singh.

In response, India slipped to 5-2, and eventually 51-5 before getting bundled out for just 111 in 18.5 overs. Coping a huge defeat in their opening Super 8 match of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the ‘Men in Blue’ now have to win each of their remaining two fixtures against Zimbabwe and West Indies.

Notably, the outcome also marked India’s first defeat in any ICC white-ball event since losing the 2023 World Cup final to Australia in Ahmedabad. Moreover, the defeat against South Africa has now ended India’s unbeaten streak in T20 World Cup matches after 12 straight wins.
