Mitchell-Chapman combine to take stunning catch [Source: X]
Up until Tuesday, Shimron Hetmyer, Babar Azam, and Brian Bennett were the contenders for the catch of the tournament in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Add Mark Chapman to the list as the Kiwi fielder, combined with Daryl Mitchell to produce a spectacular relay catch against the UAE side.
The UAE was running away with the contest before Mitchell and Chapman decided to produce a moment of magic on the field as the duo showed great teamwork to take an unreal catch.
Mitchell-Chapman combine to create magic on the field
The incident happened in the 15th over as the UAE batter, Alishan Sharafu, was going hammer and tongs, and he looked in good touch against the New Zealand bowlers. The batter was playing at 55 when Mitchell Santner took his all-important wicket.
Mitchell bowled a tossed-up ball as the UAE batter shuffled across and heaved the ball between long-on and deep mid-wicket region. Mark Chapman was standing at deep-mid as he grabbed the ball, but the fielder lost his balance as he tumbled across the ropes.
However, before crossing the ropes, he flipped the ball in the air as Mitchell ran quickly from long-on and took the catch as both fielders combined to create magic on the field.
Chapman hardly had any time to react, but the fielder used his presence of mind as he pushed the ball in the air and Mitchell was quick to latch onto it.
How the catch turned the tides for the Kiwis
Before the wicket, Muhammad Waseem and Sharafu were playing an aggressive brand of cricket against the Black Caps, and had added 107 runs for the second-wicket. The partnership was going strong and the New Zealand side needed a moment of magic, which was eventually created by Chapman, and Mitchell.
After the Sharafu wicket, the UAE side lost two quick wickets as the team scored 173/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.
All the best catches taken in the T20 World Cup so far
On the opening day of the T20 World Cup, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi combined to take a similar catch on the boundary ropes. In the Pakaistan vs Netherlands match, Dutch batter, Michael Levitt miscued a shot as Babar was standing at long-off. The fielder grabbed the ball, but he was going over the ropes as he flipped the ball and Shaheen was there to take the ball.
On the same day, in the West Indies vs Scotland clash, Scottish batter, George Munsey miscued a pull as Hetmyer flew like a Superman to his right and grabbed the ball mid-air to take the early catch of the tournament.
Another outstanding catch of the tournament was taken by Zimbabwe superstar Brian Bennett against Oman. In the closing stages of the Oman innings, batter Nadeem Khan couldn’t get the distance on his attempted slog and Bennett showed his athleticism as he ran towards his right from deep-mid wicket and leaped in the air to take a blinder to stun the opposition.
