Ishan Kishan soared back into form with an electrifying half-century against Zimbabwe in the second T20I of the three-match series. Later in the field, however, the star Indian wicketkeeper sustained one of the most embarrassing moments in recent memory.

During the fag end of the Zimbabwe innings, the cricketer missed one of the easiest run out opportunities to reprieve Zimbabwe’s number nine batter, Newman Nyamhuri.

Ishan Kishan reprieves Zimbabwe tail-ender with epic brain-fade

Ishan Kishan suffered a monumental brain-fade against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 25. The incident occurred during the 15th over of the Zimbabwe innings, when a well-set Tadiwanashe Marumani cut away Ravi Bishnoi’s googly towards the sweeper.

After completing a run, Marumani’s partner Newman Nyamhuri charged halfway down the pitch for a possible second. With Marumani screaming and wringing his hands for Nyamhuri to turn back, Ishan collected the ball and decided to “underarm” it towards the stumps for an easy run out.

However, the Indian wicketkeeper seemed to have taken it too casually as the ball missed the stumps, allowing Nyamhuri to return to the crease on time.

The moment left Ishan Kishan seemingly embarrassed as the 28-year-old covered his face out of sheer shame.

Ishan Kishan hands Brian Bennett a lifeline

Interestingly, the missed run out opportunity was not the only instance of Ishan Kishan suffering a brain-fade of sorts in the second T20I against Zimbabwe. Earlier in the game, the cricketer also handed Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett a timely lifeline.

In the first over, Bennett attempted to cut away Mayank Yadav’s short-of-length delivery, only to nick the ball towards Kishan. The Indian wicketkeeper, however, seemed unbothered and made no appeal for a caught behind.

With the bat, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter enjoyed a prolific outing as he smashed his 12th T20I half-century. The cricketer smeared 81 runs off just 44 balls to top score in the Indian innings.

The blistering left-handed batter launched nine boundaries and two huge sixes, and shared counterattacking partnerships with captain Shreyas Iyer and fellow half-centurion Tilak Varma. His innings and Varma’s 60* catapulted the Indian total to 219-5 in 20 overs.

In doing so, the 28-year-old also notched up the highest individual score ever recorded by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in a T20I match in Zimbabwe. He surpassed previous record-holder Sanju Samson, and even the likes of MS Dhoni and Robin Uthappa in a rare list. 

Indian bowlers later complemented Ishan’s effort as they bundled out Zimbabwe for just 129 in 17.5 overs. Part-timer Abhishek Sharma picked up three wickets in the innings, while fast bowlers Yash Thakur and Prince Yadav chipped in with two wickets each.

Team India won the match by 90 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series in Harare. The two sides will now face each other on Sunday, July 26.
