Abhishek Sharma sustained his lean patch in India's ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe. Opening the batting alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek registered another single-digit score, with Blessing Muzarabani getting his prized scalp in the second over. 

Interestingly, Blessing Muzarabani dismissed Abhishek Sharma for the second consecutive time in the ongoing India vs Zimbabwe series. Furthermore, the Zimbabwean speedster has a prolific record against the Indian opener, getting rid of him thrice in international cricket.

The rivalry between Abhishek Sharma and Blessing Muzarabani has been one-sided in international cricket. Statistically, Muzarabani has bowled 21 balls to Abhishek in T20Is, conceding only eight runs and dismissing the Indian opener thrice. 

In other words, Abhishek has registered a miserable average of 2.67 against Muzarabani in international cricket. 

Notably, Muzarabani also emerged as Abhishek's nemesis in the IPL 2026, taking his wicket in the sixth group-stage match of the tournament between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. He has bowled five balls, going for eight runs and taking Abhishek's wicket in the lucrative Indian T20 league. 

26 balls, 16 runs, 4 dismissals. These numbers certainly paint a grim picture, highlighting how Muzarabani has Abhishek's number in international cricket as well as IPL.

The Pattern: How has Blessing Muzarabani trapped Abhishek Sharma time and again?

The numbers presented in the table above signify that Abhishek Sharma has persistently struggled to get going against Blessing Muzarabani. While his strike rate reads a modest 61.53, quite contrasting to his reputation of a swashbuckler, Abhishek has been dismissed four times by the Zimbabwe ace in T20Is and IPL combined. 

To decode the pattern, we analysed Muzarabani's lines and lengths whenever he has faced Abhishek as his opponent. Our investigation reveals that Muzarabani has consistently hit the short of good length or hard length to keep the Indian opener under the pump. 

As evidenced by the data presented above, Muzarabani has relentlessly hit the hard length, also called 'short of good length' in cricketing terms. 19 of his 26 balls, which is roughly 73 per cent of deliveries, have been around the short of good length, preventing Abhishek Sharma from freeing his arms. 

Interestingly, Muzarabani has bowled two short balls to Abhishek, going for boundaries on both occasions. On the contrary, his hard-length deliveries have pressurised the Indian opener, dismissing him four times in the shortest format, including once in the IPL. 

Why does Abhishek Sharma struggle against Muzarabani's hard-length delivery?

The 6-8m length from the striker's end is called the hard length. The term is self-explanatory, as the hard length confuses the batters regarding foot movement and doesn't allow them to free their arms. 

Abhishek Sharma's game is based on excellent hand-eye co-ordination. Instead of playing with a textbook technique, Abhishek loves capitalising on any width outside the off and leg stumps. 

Against pacers bowling from over the wicket, Abhishek generally dances down the track and tries to collect boundaries over the point and cover regions. On the other hand, Blessing Muzarabani doesn't provide him with enough width, nor does he go too full or short to help his cause. 

On instances when Abhishek has charged down the track to counter Muzarabani, the Zimbabwean pacer has either followed him or beaten him with extra bounce. Standing 6' 8", Muzarabani has taken the advantage of his height to outfox Abhishek, time and again. 

Thus, his ability to hit the hard length and generate steep bounce has helped Blessing Muzarabani dominate Abhishek Sharma so far. 

How can Abhishek Sharma bounce back vs Blessing Muzarabani?

Coming to the second T20I between India and Zimbabwe, Abhishek Sharma realised that he couldn't neutralise the tall and relentless Muzarabani by taking the aggressive route and charging down the track. 

Although Abhishek waited for the ball to arrive and perfectly steered it, his inability to keep it down resulted in his dismissal off Muzarabani's bowling in the second T20I. 

While Muzarabani yet again got his prized scalp, Abhishek's approach hinted that he will try to execute more steers and orthodox cut shots against the Zimbabwean pacer in the upcoming matches. 

Apart from playing delicate cricket, Abhishek may also take his time against Muzarabani and choose the other Zimbabwean bowlers as his targets to overcome the lean patch. 

Given that he has been an absolute champion, we reckon Abhishek can definitely bounce back and improve his numbers if he frustrates Muzarabani and forces him to commit mistakes with his grit and determination.
