Ibrahim Zadran showers emotional farewell tribute for Trott
Afghanistan opening batter Ibrahim Zadran bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award against Canada in Chennai on Thursday, February 19. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, the 24-year-old expressed his admirations for outbound national head coach Jonathan Trott.
Zadran thanked the former England cricketer for always assisting him and his Afghan teammates in their times of need. Ibrahim Zadran also dedicated his ‘Player of the Match’ laurel with the Englishman, and even handed his award to the outgoing coach.
The 24-year-old cricketer said, “I want to dedicate my ‘Player of the Match’ to coach Jonathan Trott. I have learned lots of things from him. He has encouraged and supported all of us. Under his coaching, we have gained lots of achievements in international cricket. I wish him all the best for his future.”
Rashid Khan gets emotional on Trott’s last day as coach
As one can expect, Ibrahim Zadran was not the only Afghanistan cricketer who got teary-eyed on Jonathan Trott’s final day as national head coach. Team captain Rashid Khan also delivered an emotional tribute for the former England cricketer.
Speaking before the match against Canada, the legendary Afghanistan all-rounder said “Tomorrow is Jonathan Trott's last game with us. We've had some unbelievable games and tours with him. He has been someone who has taken Afghanistan cricket to where it is now. I think he has worked so hard with every single one. Definitely everyone around us will miss him so much. He played a main role in taking this team on the right way, right path.”
Jonathan Trott ends decorated Afghanistan career
Compatible to Ibrahim Zadran and Rashid Khan’s claims, Jonathan Trott played a significant role in overseeing the rise of Afghanistan cricket, especially in ICC events. First appointed as head coach back in July 2022, the team secured historic wins over Pakistan, Sri Lanka and defending champions England at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.
Even in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the UAE, the Afghans reached the semifinal of the tournament.
Afghanistan also became a formidable force in bilateral tours, and registered some remarkable ODI series wins over Bangladesh and South Africa in late-2024.
In November 2025, the 44-year-old confirmed that he will be stepping down as the team’s head coach following the conclusion of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Afghanistan rout Canada to claim consolation win
Afghanistan secured a huge 82-run win in their Group D dead-rubber against Canada in Chennai on February 19. Batting first, Rashid Khan and co. mounted 200-4 in 20 overs. Ibrahim Zadran clattered 95* of those runs from just 56 balls with seven fours and five sixes to top-score in the innings.
Bowlers Mohammad Nabi (4-7), and Rashid Khan (2-19) restricted Canada to just 118-8 in response as Afghanistan finished third on the Group D points table.
With Trott out of the picture, the ACB will be expected to name a new head coach soon.
