On Monday, October 26, India left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal returned to form and fell one run short of a double hundred against New Zealand A in the ongoing unofficial Test. Padikkal’s knock ended in controversy as the 26-year-old was unhappy with the umpire.
Padikkal, who was struggling for runs across formats following the Sri Lanka Tests, regained his lost mojo and was just one run shy of a double hundred in New Zealand. As he dreamt of a historic milestone in difficult conditions, a poor umpiring decision ended his stay.

On the 5th ball of the 89th over, New Zealand A bowler Gibson bowled a wide delivery that went down the leg to the keeper, kissing Devdutt Padikkal’s legs. The southpaw attempted a shot but missed the line. The players heard a noise, and the umpire was satisfied with the appeal.
He raised his finger to signal out, and Padikkal, who had turned his back, was shocked by the decision. He expressed his anger before walking to the pavilion. It is worth noting that DRS was absent because it is an unofficial Test. Nonetheless, Padikkal’s knock featured 24 fours and three sixes.

Devdutt Padikkal Cements No. 3 Spot For India in Tests
For the longest time, India have struggled for the No. 3 spot in Test cricket. Recently, India tried Sai Sudharsan at No.3, but the southpaw was injured for Sri Lanka Tests which opened the doors for Padikkal.
In Sri Lanka, Devdutt seized the opportunity and slammed 328 runs in 3 innings, which featured twin centuries. He averaged 109.33 on that tour. Following the Sri Lanka Tests, Padikkal was part of Australia A vs India A series, which didn't go as per plans for him.
The 26-year-old scored just 3 runs in 3 innings in the One-Day games, while he amassed 119 runs in four-day games. Therefore, a doubt creeped in several minds whether he is the right fit for No.3. Therefore, the 199-run knock was essential for the RCB star to silence his critics.
