Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings played the first of the El Clasico of the IPL 2026, with CSK winning the first bout at the Wankhede Stadium. As MI bowed down to their arch-rival, the game was full of on-field drama, including a feud between Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton.

Chasing a tall target put up by Chennai, Mumbai Indians were in deep waters when Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were looking to revive the innings after losing three early wickets.

An incident unfolded in the 10th innings of the second innings, when the left-handed batter tucked the final ball to deep mid-wicket pocket, calling for two runs. As the deep fielder charged in early, Varma and Yadav could only take a single.

Annoyed with the young MI batter, who had hit him for two boundaries earlier in the over, Overton lost his cool as he got into an arguement, scolding Tilak Varma for not taking a double. The senior statesman, Suryakumar Yadav, had to intervene to cool-off the drama.

Sanju Samson, Akeal Hosein spoil MI's party

It was a Sanju Samson special on display at Wankhede on Thursday evening. The stylish batter was at his imperial best during his unbeaten 101, where he took on Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and company. As the CSK opener slammed his fifth hundred in IPL cricket, his efforts took the team total to 207/6.

Later in the chase, MI batters looked like a mere shadow of themselves. The home team lost three wickets on just 11 runs, but Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav brought them with a 73-run stand.

However, nothing went Mumbai's way post and prior to the Tilak-Surya stand. For CSK, Akeal Hosein emerged as the bankable bowler, taking 4/17 in his four-over spell. As a result, CSK bagged its biggest victory over MI in the IPL.

Can MI still qualify for the playoffs?

After losing their fifth match in the IPL 2026, MI's campaign has taken an implausible hit, as the star-studded team is looking like a clueless unit on the field.

However, MI can still qualify for the playoffs, as a team needs 16 points to advance. With seven games to go, the Hardik Pandya-led side needs to revamp everything from A to Z.

Having said that, MI’s key men - Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah- are woefully out of touch. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who started off the season with a match-winning 78, is recovering from a left hamstring injury from the last three games.

For now, Mumbai have a long break, as the five-time champions will next play the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Uppal next Wednesday, April 29.
