On Friday night, Rajshahi Warriors met Chattogram Royals once again in the Bangladesh Premier League 2025/26 knockouts after facing a 6-wicket defeat in the Qualifier 1, after taking a longer route to the final, beating Sylhet Titans on their way.
However, this time around, the result ended up in their favour, courtesy of a scintillating century in the big match by opening batter Tanzid Hasan, which gave them a headstart in the match. Having finished second on the table, the Royals got time to rest and recover for the big match, but fell comfortably short, despite having a favourable result in the toss.
As Rajshahi Warriors lift the 2025/26 BPL title, here’s a brief look at how the match unfolded in Mirpur.
Tanzid Hasan’s ton puts Rajshahi Warriors in the driver’s seat
Upon winning the toss, Chattogram Royals asked Rajshahi Warriors to bat first, and the openers made sure the Warriors got off to a good start, putting on an 83-run stand in 10.2 overs before Sahibzada Farhan was dismissed for a run-a-ball 30 with two fours and a six to his name. On the other end, Tanzid Hasan kept batting and took the game deep.
New Zealand star Kane Williamson added a quick 24 off 15 in a 47-run partnership with Tanzid before Shoriful Islam got rid of him after two fours and a six. Tanzid took the aggressive route to complete his third BPL century, reaching the three figure mark in 61 balls, before he was dismissed by Mukidul Islam while trying to take him on at the end of the 19th over.
In his commanding century, Tanzid scored six fours and seven towering sixes to guide his team to a score of 174/4 in 20 overs. Both opening bowlers, Shoriful and Mukidul, scalped two wickets each, with Mukidul finishing as the pick of the bowling unit with figures of 2/20 from his 4 overs.
Binura Fernando and Hasan Murad leave Chattogram in dismay
While chasing a considerably big target on the big day, Chattogram Royals faced a double blow early in the innings, as Binura Fernando bowled with his tail up to get rid of Mohammad Naim, followed by the big name in Mahmudul Hasan Joy in the third over. Naim’s stumps were dismantled for a shaky 9 off 10 with two fours, while Hasan Joy couldn’t open his tally and was caught by Tanzid Hasan for his two-ball duck.
The early blows put Chattogram in a mode where they needed to consolidate, which further put them under pressure in the middle overs, where the left-arm orthodox bowler Hasan Murad stepped up to scalp prized wickets of Mirza Baig, Hasan Nawaz and captain Mahedi Hasan to reduce the opposition to 92/6 in 14 overs, making a win a mere formality.
Kiwi all-rounder James Neesham, who skipped the India tour to play these playoffs, bowled an economical spell of 2/24 off his four overs, dismissing wicketkeeper Zahiduzzaman after his 11 off 13, followed by Aamer Jamal on 8(5). Hasan Murad finished with 3/15 (4), while Binura Fernando, who was the pick of the bowlers got 3/9 (4) as they win the big final by 63 runs.
