The next few months are crucial for Team India as they prepare for the marquee 2027 ODI World Cup. For the mega event, the Men in Blue need all their best players to be absolutely fit, and one player who has shown signs of wear and tear in recent months is the ODI, and Test skipper, Shubman Gill.

The right-handed batter sustained a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa last year at the Eden Gardens, and it seems that problem has not left Gill as he continues to struggle with it.

The Indian ODI and Test captain also had neck issues during the IPL 2026 season, and as a result, he has decided to take a bold step to get better before the gruelling season begins.

Shubman Gill seeks help from outside to cure his neck problem

Normally, the BCCI has a medical team that takes care of all the injury-related issues suffered by the Indian players. The team is situated at the Centre of Excellence (CoE), and they monitor the health of every Indian cricketer.

However, it seems Shubman Gill has lost faith in them, and as reported by TOI, the 26-year-old has been consulting specialists from outside the BCCI medical team to address the neck pain that has troubled him since the Eden Gardens Test match.

"Gill has been battling the neck pain for some time. It flares up every now and then, especially when he bats for a longer period. He has been consulting specialists outside BCCI for treatment and he is much better now. It's an ongoing process. India felt his absence in that South Africa," a BCCI Source told TOI.

Heavy workload led to Gill's breakdown

Gill has played non-stop cricket for a while, and he has seen a heavy workload on his body ever since becoming the ODI and Test skipper of the Indian team.

He was on the road for a majority of the year (2025), and has been playing continuous cricket in 2026, and that has hampered his body.

Ever since 2025, Gill has hardly taken a break from the game, and playing competitive cricket at the highest level, with so much pressure, took a toll on his body as the batter sustained a neck injury that has troubled him for the last few months.

The injury also led him to miss an IPL 2026 fixture against the Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Not only Gill, but Bumrah also managing his workload carefully

Not only captain Gill, but his most trusted weapon with the ball, Jasprit Bumrah, is also managing his workload carefully and has taken a cautious approach as he gets back to full fitness.

According to TOI, Bumrah is gradually increasing his bowling workload as he prepares to be fully fit for the first Test against Sri Lanka. The star pacer sustained a knee injury during the India vs England second ODI match earlier this year, and as a result, he was ruled out of the series finale.

Bumrah suffered swelling on his knee after the second ODI, but the BCCI medical team has assured that the pacer will be one hundred percent fit for the first Test match against the Lankan Lions that takes place at Galle.
