ICC has punished Indian batter Shafali Verma for breaching the Code of Conduct during the India vs Zimbabwe second Women’s T20I match in Raipur.

As per the ICC press release, the opener breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

Shafali fined for throwing the ball in frustration

The unfortunate incident happened during Zimbabwe’s batting on October 18 in Raipur. Zimbabwean batter Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano chipped a ball to mid-off, and Shafali dropped the catch.

The Indian fielder, in frustration, threw the ball towards the ground, and it resulted in her being punished by the ICC. Also, one demerit point has been added to Shafali’s disciplinary record, and it was her first offence in a 24-month period.

The Indian opener admitted to the offence, and hence, no disciplinary hearing was conducted by the match referee. The sanction was proposed by G.S. Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

Shafali Verma continues her dream run in 2026

Throughout her career, the Indian opener was known as a talented yet inconsistent batter. However, since the start of 2026, she has witnessed a 360-degree turnaround.

Alongside her opening partner, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali has shone at the big stage, and she has been the leading run-getter in Women’s T20Is this year. In 26 matches, she has 922 runs, with a strike rate of 165.52, including eight fifties and a solitary hundred in the Asian Games.

She was India’s best batter in the Asia Cup, which India won, and then also led from the front in the Women’s Asian Games 2026.

Also, in the second T20I, she surpassed Mandhana to become the batter with the most fifty-plus scores in a calendar year.

Together with Mandhana, the right-handed batter has stabilised the top order, and in the second T20I, the pair created a record of smashing the most fifty-plus scores for any wicket in a calendar year in Women’s T20Is.
