In a significant development, the Rajasthan Royals have announced Riyan Parag as the captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026).
Notably, the franchise shared the news through their official social media channels on Friday. This decision marks an important moment for the team as they prepare for a new season with fresh leadership.
Rajasthan Royals announce Riyan Parag as their captain
It is important to note that the young batter will take over the captaincy from Sanju Samson, who was traded to the CSK ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The management finalised Riyan Parag’s name as Samson’s replacement after careful consideration.
Although the other candidates were not officially revealed, it is believed that players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja were also in the race for the leadership role. In the end, the franchise chose Parag, showing confidence in his potential and long-term value to the team.
Riyan Parag's captaincy experience
It is not the first time that Riyan Parag will lead the Royals. Earlier, he captained the side in eight matches when Sanju Samson was dealing with fitness concerns. During that period, Parag performed well with the bat and maintained an average of 38.57.
The Assam batter also scored a career-best 95 runs against the KKR at Eden Gardens. However, the team managed to win only two out of those eight matches under his leadership. Even so, the experience gave him valuable exposure and helped him grow as a leader.
Riyan Parag's performance in IPL
Since making his IPL debut in 2019, Parag has remained a consistent part of Rajasthan Royals. He has played all seven seasons with the franchise. In the last two seasons, he featured in every match for the team, further proving his importance.
The 2024 season was his best in terms of performance with the bat. He scored 573 runs at an impressive average of 52.09, along with a strike rate of 149.21. Overall, he has played 84 matches for the Royals, scoring 1,566 runs and taking seven wickets. These numbers show his steady improvement over the years and his growing impact on the team.
At just 24 years old, Riyan Parag’s appointment represents one of the most notable leadership changes in the history of Royals. Many people expected the team to rely on experienced players such as Ravindra Jadeja. Instead, the management has chosen a younger player, focusing on stability and future growth.
It is important to note that Sanju Samson’s move to CSK ended an 11-year association with Rajasthan Royals. Under his captaincy, the team regularly competed for playoff spots and even reached the IPL final in 2022.
Despite those strong moments in the past, the Royals finished ninth last season, winning only four of their 14 matches. With Riyan Parag now officially leading the side, the franchise will hope to turn things around and deliver a stronger performance in IPL 2026.
