Zimbabwe pulled off a stunning 23-run victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup 2026, producing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. At the R. Premadasa Stadium, few gave Zimbabwe a chance against the former champions.

By the end of the game, they had outplayed Australia in every department. Asked to bat first, Zimbabwe made a confident start. Tadiwanash Marumani came out swinging from the word go, hitting 35 off 21 deliveries.

Zimbabwe finished strong after Sikandar Raza's late surge

After his dismissal, Brian Bennett took control of the innings. He played a beautiful knock as he opened the gaps and rotated the strike. Ryan Burl supported him well with a steady 35, and the pair built a crucial partnership to steady the innings.

In the final overs, captain Sikandar Raza provided the spark. Battling leg cramps, he smashed 25 off just 13 balls, including a towering six. Bennett remained unbeaten on 64 off 56 balls as Zimbabwe finished on a competitive 169 for 2.

The Aussies collapsed in the chase to endure humilting defeat

Australia’s reply began in disastrous fashion. They slumped to 29/4 inside the first five overs. Blessing Muzarabani struck early and often, while Brad Evans removed key batters to put Australia on the back foot. The pressure never eased.

Glenn Maxwell and Matt Renshaw attempted a rescue act. Renshaw played a fighting knock of 63, and Maxwell added 31. For a brief moment, Australia looked back in the contest. But Ryan Burl dismissed Maxwell at a crucial stage, shifting momentum again.

Muzarabani returned to remove Renshaw and finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 17. Australia were bowled out for 146 in 19.3 overs.

The result has shaken Group B and dented Australia's Super 8 hopes. For Zimbabwe, it was a famous and well-deserved triumph, as they also broke several records in the process.
