Pant to undergo second round of fitness test [Source: AFP]
India’s star batter, Rishabh Pant, failed to clear a fitness test on Sunday at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), but the keeper-batter has been given another chance to prove his fitness ahead of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
Pant sustained a side strain injury during the Irani Cup final, and since then, he has been out of the Indian team. With the Test matches against New Zealand starting on November 19, the southpaw faces a race against time to be match-fit.
Pant to undergo second round of fitness test
According to a report by Cricinfo, Rishabh Pant is set to undergo a second round of assessment, as the BCCI wants to check his fitness level before giving clearance for the New Zealand Tests.
If the maverick batter gets the clearance, he will join the India A squad for their third unofficial Test match against New Zealand A, starting on November 7. Pant was picked for the India A squad for the first two unofficial Tests, but he was eventually ruled out of the matches.
Selectors named Kumar Kushagra as his replacement in the India A squad for the unofficial matches. The BCCI is hopeful that Pant will be fit in time to play the Test series opener in Wellington, but if he gets ruled out, the side has Dhruv Jurel, who can play as the keeper-batter.
Injuries continue to hamper Pant in 2026
Fair to say that injuries have taken a toll on Rishabh Pant, as the left-handed batter has been marred by them throughout the year. Days ahead of India vs New Zealand ODIs earlier this year, the batter suffered a right-sided lateral abdominal oblique muscle tear, and since then, he has failed to get back into the ODI setup.
In the IPL 2026, Pant was hit on his elbow during the LSG Vs RCB match, and he was taken off the field for a while. In the India vs Sri Lanka Test series, the southpaw was struck on his wrist, and he had to retire hurt.
The unfortunate trend continued as he sustained a calf injury in the Irani Cup final, and is working hard on making his long-awaited international comeback.
