Afghanistan's Remarkable Rise In ODI Cricket
One thing that cannot be denied is that Afghanistan have made great progress in international cricket in the ODI format. Since playing their first ODI match in 2009 against Denmark, the team has shown remarkable performance.
The Afghan team also achieved memorable victories during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The team would have entered the semi-final if they had not lost the match against Australia.
They also reached the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup for the first time. In 2024, Afghanistan also made history by beating South Africa 2–1 in a three-match ODI series. In the 2025–26 home series against Bangladesh, Afghanistan secured a 3–0 clean sweep.
In 2026, Afghanistan also performed brilliantly during their tour of Ireland. They won four matches in a five-match ODI series. In the 2026 UAE ODI Tri-Series, Afghanistan lifted the trophy without losing a match.
