Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir, who currently lives in England, could put forward his name in the upcoming IPL 2027 mini auction, set to take place in Goa on December 16.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Amir, who recently registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL), could put his name in the auction hat. Interestingly, despite a ban on Pakistani players in the IPL, Amir can register for the auction since he currently holds a British Passport.
The advantage of enrolling as a UK citizen in the IPL is that the player may not require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Amir could become second Pakistan player to feature in IPL with British passport in hand
If Amir registers for the IPL auction, and a franchise indeed goes after him, he will become just the second Pakistan player after the legendary Azhar Mahmood to play in the Indian league, holding a British Passport.
Despite a ban on the Pakistan players after the inaugural season, Mahmood managed to feature in the IPL in the 2012, 2013, and 2015 seasons since he held a British Passport, and was no longer a Pakistan citizen.
However, it would be interesting to see if any franchise actually shows any interest in acquiring him in the mini auction if he registers for the marquee event.
IPL teams that can target Amir if he registers in the auction
There is no guarantee that the left-arm seamer will register for the upcoming IPL mini auction, but if he does, there are teams that could be interested in acquiring his services.
For starters, RCB needs a solid Josh Hazlewood replacement if the Aussie bowler doesn’t participate in the IPL 2027. Cricket Australia wants its players to prioritise international cricket (especially with The Ashes and the World Cup next year), and if he can’t play, the team needs an experienced pacer.
Amir can be a perfect short-term solution as he can be a genuine wicket-taking threat. Moreover, KKR, who were marred by injuries last season, also need a quality overseas pacer in their ranks, and Amir more than fits the bill.
