New Zealand Honour Bob Blair’s Legacy
On Wednesday, June 24, a massive tragedy hit New Zealand cricket after their legendary figure Bob Blair breathed his last on his 94th birthday. Bob was the fifth-oldest living cricketer in the world and a pioneer of New Zealand cricket.
The reason behind Bob’s death is not revealed publicly, but the former seamer passed away in England. Bob Blair played 19 Tests for New Zealand, where he took 43 wickets. Even with the bat, Bob scored a solitary fifty in his 11-year career for the Black Caps.
Who Was Bob Blair?
As mentioned above, Bob Blair made his New Zealand debut on 6 March 1953 against South Africa at the age of 21. He had a formidable domestic record with 330 wickets at a remarkable average of 15 in 59 first-class matches played predominantly for Wellington and one season for Central Districts.
He didn’t have a great international career, but will go down in history books for his bravery and committment for the badge. For the unversed, 21-year-old Blair lost his fiance Nerissa Love, in the Tangiwai rail disaster on Christmas Eve that killed 151 people. Notably, Bob was playing Test match during that time.
On day two, Blair, stayed at hotel but when New Zealand lost 9 wickets and everyone thought that the match is over, the 21-year-old walked to bat. The crowd of 23,000 fell silent. Players from both sides wept and gave him a standing ovation.
It remains one of the most moving moments in sporting history and was the inspiration behind the creation of the Tangiwai Shield, which was jointly introduced by NZC and Cricket South Africa in 2024 for the men's Test series between New Zealand and South Africa.
New Zealand CEO On Bob Blair’s Legacy
"The story of Bob Blair and the Tangiwai rail disaster has left an indelible mark on cricket in both New Zealand and South Africa. The courage and camaraderie shown during the second Test in South Africa in 1953 and in the years that followed epitomise everything that is great about sport." NZ Interim CEO said.
"The cricket community extends its deepest condolences to Bob's wife Barbara, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and all who loved him," he added.
As a sign of respect to Bob Blair and his family, New Zealand are donning black armbands for the first day of the third Test against England on Thursday in Nottingham.
