Delhi Capitals (DC) kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a dramatic three-wicket victory against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Monday (May 11).

However, despite the memorable win, Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel faced disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Delhi Capitals produced one of their best batting performances of the season while chasing a massive target of 211 runs. The victory helped DC move to 10 points from 12 matches and lifted them to 7th place in the IPL 2026 standings.

Delhi Capitals stay alive in IPL 2026 playoff race

Captain Axar Patel played a major role in the successful chase. The all-rounder finally returned to form with a quickfire 56 off just 30 deliveries. His innings included eight boundaries and two sixes and marked his first half-century in the IPL after a long gap of 20 innings.

Star player David Miller also made an important contribution with a 51-run knock from 28 balls. Later in the innings, Ashutosh Sharma added 24 valuable runs, while Madhav Tiwari remained unbeaten on 18 to guide Delhi closer to victory.

The winning moment came in dramatic fashion when Auqib Nabi Dar smashed a six off Yash Thakur on the final ball of the 19th over, sealing an unforgettable win for Delhi Capitals.

Axar Patel fined by BCCI

However, even after the win, the BCCI took strict action against Axar Patel for breaching the IPL's over-rate regulations. In an official statement released on Tuesday, the IPL confirmed that Delhi Capitals were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during Match No. 55 of the tournament.

Since it was Delhi's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Axar Patel was fined ₹12 lakh.

"Delhi Capitals (DC) Captain Axar Patel has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 55 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala.

As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Axar Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs," the IPL said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

It is important to mention that Axar Patel is not the first captain to be fined for maintaining a slow over rate this year. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer (PBKS), Shubman Gill (GT) and Hardik Pandya (MI) have also faced penalties for similar offences during the IPL 2026 season.

Who will DC face next in the IPL 2026?

It is vital to note that Delhi Capitals still have a slim chance of making the IPL 2026 playoffs. For that, they need to win the remaining two games and improve their net run rate, and even if that is not enough, their fate also depends on the results of the other teams.

Delhi Capitals will next face Rajasthan Royals on May 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
