RCB’s ownership situation has once again become a major talking point in the lead-up to the much-awaited IPL 2026 season. Earlier this month, fresh developments hinted reports of the Glazer family entering the scene.
Best known as the owners of the prominent football club Manchester United, reports are linking the Glazer family as the RCB new owners, with their financial movements drawing attention and gradually bringing the spotlight onto how their deal could be structured.
Glazers raise RCB funds using Manchester United assets
As per a recent development, the Glazer family has been reportedly found to be using Manchester United assets for raising RCB funds.
A document circulating on social media shows that a charge has been created against assets linked to Manchester United in favour of Bank of America, essentially indicating that the club’s property has been placed as security while arranging funds.
This has led to strong speculation that the Glazers may be raising money through loans backed by United’s assets to support a possible bid for the RCB franchise.
While there is no official confirmation that the loan is directly tied to an IPL purchase, the timing of the filing alongside reports of interest in RCB has fuelled widespread discussion around a potential ownership move.
Who are the Glazers?
The Glazers first demonstrated their interest in acquiring the IPL-winning RCB franchise earlier this month. Notably, the RCB was put on sale by their previous owners, the United Spirits, shortly after the franchise won the IPL 2025 season last year.
Avram Glazer, the executive co-chairman of Manchester United, reportedly placed a bid of $1.8 billion (around Rs 16,300 crore) for the RCB a couple of weeks ago standing in line as one of the RCB new owners.
It is worth noting that American businessman Malcolm Glazer started a family business in 1970, and founded First Allied Corporation which served as a holding company for family business in the USA.
In the mid-1990s, the Glazer family also brought the National Football League side Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before entering the Premier League fray by acquiring Manchester United for 790 million pounds.
RCB on a generational run amid new acquisition
The RCB franchise, under the leadership of new captain Rajat Patidar, lifted the IPL 2025 title last year to bag their maiden IPL silverware. The franchise defeated fellow first-time title chasers Punjab Kings in a hard-fought high-scoring final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The team, comprising of the likes of legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli, will be entering the IPL 2026 season next month with a rare tag of ‘defending champions.’
Apart from RCB’s success in IPL, the women’s team has also won two of the last three WPL titles since 2024. Earlier this month, under the leadership of prolific Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, the RCB Women’s team overcame Delhi Capitals in a thrilling final at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
The occasion marked the first-ever instance of the men’s and women’s teams of the same IPL/WPL franchise holding a title simultaneously.
