Ravichandran Ashwin was quick to analyse India’s recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka. Despite India securing a series victory, the former spinner appeared particularly unhappy with Rishabh Pant’s performance.

Pant entered the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka with doubts surrounding his form and performances. That scrutiny continued after the series ended on Thursday, when Ravichandran Ashwin discussed Pant on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat.

R Ashwin Tears Into Rishabh Pant Despite India’s Series Win

Ashwin’s companion in the show Vimal Kumar felt Rishabh Pant had proved himself again with two half-centuries in three innings. However, Ashwin disagreed, making it clear that the former spinner’s expectations from Pant remained unfulfilled despite his contributions in the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.

“My expectation from Rishabh Pant has not been fulfilled till now. I am very sorry. Sonal Dinusha had his strike rate up there. But the difference is high-risk options. You might say that is the way Pant plays but, these are all statements. It is about what your team needs," Ashwin said in his YouTube channel.

Ashwin’s criticism was not about Pant’s ability to score runs, but his approach in crucial moments. He believes aggression cannot come at the cost of ignoring the team’s situation, especially when one poor decision can change a Test.

Ashwin Turns Back The Clock To Expose Pant’s Costly Mistakes

Ashwin then turned the clock back to the 2025 Headingley Test, where Rishabh Pant scored centuries in both innings. However, after reaching his second century, Pant attacked Shoaib Bashir, lost his wicket at a crucial stage, and England eventually won the match.

Ashwin then went further back to India’s 2020-21 Australia series, stressing that the historic triumph was never only because of Pant.

“Rishabh played a class knock in Sydney and Brisbane, but you couldn't have won that match without Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur. It takes 11 cricketers to build a Test and win it in the last session of the game, but it takes only 1 moment of foolishness to lose a Test,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin’s point was clear, Pant’s brilliance should not overshadow the contributions of his teammates. While the wicketkeeper-batter has produced match-winning moments, Ashwin believes one reckless decision at the wrong time can undo all the good work done by an entire team.

Ashwin Destroys ‘Once-In-A-Generation’ Argument For Pant

Ashwin also reflected on the constant backing Pant receives and the repeated “once-in-a-generation player” claims. He believes that extraordinary talent cannot become an excuse for poor decisions, especially now that Pant is an experienced Test cricketer.

For Ashwin, Pant has enough experience and ability to carry India across the biggest stages. The 39-year-old wants him to take greater responsibility, rather than relying on his reputation, because India needs his talent matched by smarter decisions.
