Rishabh Pant faced yet another injury concern during the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, as he did not take the field with his gloves during Sri Lanka’s first innings. Instead, Dhruv Jurel was the man in charge behind the stumps, as India looked to whitewash the hosts.

This has been a nagging issue that Pant has been facing in recent years, whilst also missing Test matches. The wicketkeeper has also openly admitted his frustration at getting injured so often, while also sharing some images on his socials.

Pant rejoined the India camp after their white-ball tours of England and Ireland, as they took on Sri Lanka in a two-match away series earlier this month. Despite being out of action for about 45 days, Pant had an immediate impact on the match, scoring 39 and 66 in Galle.

However, as he took the field on Day 1 of the Colombo Test, he copped several blows on the body, forcing him to retire hurt for the remainder of the day. Despite returning to bat on the subsequent day, he got hit on a few more occasions, leading him to stay out of the field when the team came out to bowl in the first innings.

He finished the match looking fine and keeping the wickets, but took to his Instagram and opened up on his recent injury woes and posted images of his bruises.

“The bumps, the banter, the belief and five days of fighting for every run, every wicket and every moment. We would have loved the 2–0, but the Lankan batters showed incredible fight to make us work for it. Champions,” he wrote.

Rishabh Pant has struggled with injuries recently

Since the left-handed batter’s return to international cricket after his horrific car crash, he has been at the receiving end of multiple injuries. Due to his swashbuckling style of play, he gets into positions where he is likely to get hit by the ball.

After injuring his ACL, PCL and MCL in the car crash, he returned to competitive cricket after about 18 months in 2024. Since then, he has suffered a fractured toe in England, which ruled him out of the 2025 series despite being in the form of his life.

Later, in January 2026, he suffered a lateral abdominal tear that forced him out of the New Zealand ODI series at home. Subsequently, he was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the ODI setup as the second wicketkeeper.

Now, in the Sri Lanka series, he was struck on the wrist by a Lahiru Kumara bouncer as he walked off the field in Colombo. Upon returning, he was hit on the shoulder, and the bruises meant Dhruv Jurel had to do the glovework for a day. Fortunately, this is an external injury and Pant is not likely to miss any action due to this.

Pant’s gritty fifty despite injury vs SL

In the second and final Test of the series, Pant was batting on 3*(15) when the medical staff took him outside to treat his wrist injury. He remained out of the field for a long time, while Ravindra Jadeja, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel and even Saransh Jain held the fort with the bat.

When he returned to bat, he stitched a crucial 112(152) partnership with Jurel and scored at a brisk rate. In the partnership, he contributed 60(74) and finished at 63(89) to guide India to 503/9 (dec.). His grit was similarly on display during the England series, when he batted with a broken toe in 2025.
