Before the start of IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered a huge jolt in the form of Pat Cummins’ injury. The SRH skipper has been dealing with back issues since last year, and he even missed the majority of the 2025/26 Ashes for Australia.

He even missed the entire T20 World Cup in February and March as his IPL franchise, SRH, was sweating hard on his fitness. The back injury meant Cummins missed the start of IPL 2026, and as a result, Ishan Kishan was appointed the team captain.

He was supposed to undergo a fitness test on Wednesday (April 15), and only a clearance certificate from Cricket Australia would allow the captain of SRH to play in the remainder of the IPL.

Cummins releases official statement on his IPL return

SRH’s bowling has blown hot and cold in IPL 2026, as the franchise has certainly missed the experience of Cummins on the field. However, on Wednesday, the Australian cricketer released an official statement, which would give his IPL side a sigh of relief.

Taking to the social media platform, Instagram, Cummins posted a photo of his family and revealed that he is coming to India after spending some quality time with his wife, and their two children.

"No place like home. Beautiful couple days back in the Blue Mountains before jetting back to India. Albie is becoming quite the photographer," Cummins posted.

The injury that cost Cummins more than 6 months

Pat Cummins made his Australian debut in 2011 and showed glimpses of his skills in a short span of time. However, he sustained a serious back injury that kept him out of the team for nearly 6 years.

Since his return, Cummins has been relatively fit and has also led the Australian team to two ICC titles, but in 2025, things changed once again. The back issues relapsed, and the right-arm pacer was kept on the sidelines.

He played the entire year through immense pain, but right before the Ashes, the injury aggravated as Cummins only played a solitary match out of the five Tests scheduled.

He missed a key series and an ICC tournament, but judging by his Instagram post, it seems the Australian and SRH skipper has received his NOC to participate in the IPL 2026.

Why SRH will benefit with Cummins' return

To be a successful IPL franchise, the team needs to have a great mixture of youth and experience. While the SRH batters have that ratio (youth and experience), the same cannot be said about their bowling department.

The attack is promising, but the bowling department lacks vision and a leader on the field. This leadership quality is what Cummins brings to the table for SRH. Moreover, tactically, he is brilliant as a captain, and he demonstrated it during the IPL 2024 season, when SRH reached the finale.

Apart from his captaincy, Cummins is a street-smart bowler, and the 32-year-old will use his hit-the-deck bowling to trouble the batters in the league. The Orange Army has a plethora of quality pacers, but they need guidance on the field, and the Aussie will give them that.
