The excitement for the 2027 ODI World Cup is growing as South Africa prepares to host the marquee event next year. Defending champions Australia have also begun their preparations and will tour the Rainbow Nation later in 2026 for a bilateral series.

Australia will visit Zimbabwe and South Africa in September 2026 to take part in two ODI series that will serve as preparation for the World Cup. However, Cricket Australia is also focusing on the Border Gavaskar Trophy at the same time.

Cricket Australia Ready To Compromise World Cup To Beat India

Notably, Australia will travel to India in 2027 for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting from January 21 to March 3, 2027. Ahead of that, Cricket Australia has scheduled the Australian A team’s visit to India in September for a multi-format series.

The upcoming Australia A tour will overlap with the senior team's Africa tour. But chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that the focus will be to send the marquee players to India to prepare for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, even if the move could compromise the defending champions' preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027.

"That will be a debate – and not trying to get too cute with it – but whether there are some (players) that can come across and play some of the white-ball series potentially in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and then join for part of the India (A) series. For some, potentially the India series will be prioritised," Bailey was quoted as saying by Cricket.com.au. 

Why is Cricket Australia prioritising Border-Gavaskar Trophy over ODI World Cup 2027?

It is worth noting that BGT is the 2nd biggest challenge for Cricket Australia after the Ashes. The Baggy Greens won the most recent edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024-25. However, it has been 22 years since they beat India in their backyard.

Australia’s 2004-05 tour to India was the last time they beat the two-time WTC runners-up 2-1 in a four-match series. Hence, the upcoming tour is crucial for Australia, which is why they will name their high-profile players in the Australia A squad for the India series next month to familiarise with the subcontinent conditions.

Another reason why Australia are prioritising the India series over World Cup preparation is to reduce their squad’s average age in Test cricket. The Australians' upcoming series is against Bangladesh, where the squad's average age has touched 33.

Hence, chief selector George Bailey remarked that the idea for the Australia A tour to India is to identify young talents who can be brought into the mix of things for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Who Are the Players CA Are Looking For in the Australia A tour to India?

The likes of Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett and Ollie Peake are in the mix to be part of the ODI set-up for the World Cup; they would most likely be part of the Australia A squad as well for the India tour.

Sam Konstas, Campbell Kellaway, Nathan McSweeney, Corey Rocchiccioli and Fergus O'Neill are also few young talents in scheme of things to make it to Australia squad for Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
