Pakistan came out of nowhere to make the T20 World Cup 2026 interesting, courtesy of a rampant hitting on Saturday during the do-or-die Super 8 clash against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. After Dasun Shanaka won the toss and asked the Men in Green to bat first, Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan made a mockery of the Sri Lankan attack to pile up 212/8 on the board.
The initial T20 World Cup qualification scenario for Pakistan was that the Salman Agha-led side had to win by at least 63 runs if they put on a score between 103 and 150 runs. They could afford a victory of 64 runs if the scoreboard read between 151 and 198, and a win of 65 runs if the scoreboard got beyond 199 or more.
Sri Lanka Bowlers Make The Job Easy For Pakistan
As things stand, even if Sri Lanka post 147 on the board (or less) irrespective of how many wickets they lose, Pakistan will qualify alongside England for the semi-finals. In the process, New Zealand, who had a heartbreaking defeat to England less than 24 hours ago, will be eliminated from the tournament.
Since coming to the middle, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, who came to open in place of the dropped Saim Ayub. Even Babar Azam was kicked out of the Pakistan playing XI as well, and all the moved paid off for the Men in Green.
Farhan and Fakhar raced to 64 runs at the end of the Powerplay, and the scoreboard changed rapidly when they were on strike. They were 176/0 on the board before Dushmantha Chameera got the wicket of Fakhar.
However, the damage was done by then, as Fakhar made nine fours and four sixes in an entertaining 42-ball 84. Farhan did not stop despite the wicket crumbling from the other end, as none of Khawaja Nafay, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Agha got to double digits.
Sahibzada Farhan Creates Never-Happened-Before T20 World Cup Record
Sahibzada Farhan ended his knock after a 60-ball 100, becoming the first player to notch up two centuries in a single T20 World Cup edition. In fact, only Chris Gayle had two centuries in the history of the T20 World Cup, while the others had only one to their names.
Farhan also became the player with the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition. He smashed 18 sixes so far, breaking the previous record held by Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer (17 sixes each).
Most Sixes in a single Edition of T20 World Cups
- 18 - Sahibzada Farhan (Pakistan) in 2026*
- 17 - Nicholas Pooran (West Indies) in 2024
- 17 - Shimron Hetmyer (West Indies) in 2026
- 16 - Chris Gayle (West Indies) in 2012
- 16 - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan) in 2024
Will Pakistan reach the semi-final in a dramatic manner after the Sri Lanka game? Only time will tell the real story.
