West Indies coach Daren Sammy has declared war on hosts India ahead of the much-awaited virtual quarterfinal match of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup between the two sides. With both teams yearning for a spot for the semifinals and some redemption after South Africa bashing in Ahmedabad, India and West Indies will be facing each other in the final Super 8 match of the tournament on Sunday, March 1 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

A day prior to the blockbuster showdown, West Indies coach and former captain Daren Sammy fired out a stern warning to the defending champions as they aim to conquer their demons from the past.

Daren Sammy says his “soldiers” ready for India

West Indies coach Daren Sammy has fired a warning shot at Team India ahead of their must-win Super 8 clash of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The former captain also urged his team to put memories of South Africa defeat behind in a bid to focus solely on the impending challenge.

While speaking with the reporters during a pre-match press conference on Saturday, February 28, Sammy said “All my soldiers are ready for the battle tomorrow. Leave South Africa in Ahmedabad is the message. Focus solely on what we need to do vs Indian team.”

History on West Indies’ side as Eden Gardens beckons

Incidentally, the last time these two sides faced each other in a T20 World Cup game in India, a Daren Sammy-led West Indies team brutalized the ‘Men in Blue’ to march into the final of the 2016 edition a decade ago.

While the ghosts of 2016 may not weigh heavily on the impending contest, the emotional residue of that crushing semifinal defeat could still linger within certain corners of the Indian dressing room.

Moreover, active senior pros like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were part of India’s heartbreak a decade ago as they saw Daren Sammy’s jubilant Caribbean troops march their way to an eventual T20 World Cup glory a couple of days later, at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens no less.

Similar campaigns, and a spot in the semifinal to play for

Both India and West Indies teams have so far undergone similar campaigns this 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. While the defending champions topped the Group A points table with comprehensive wins over Pakistan, Namibia, Netherlands and the USA; West Indies walloped England, Nepal, Italy and Scotland to top the Group C standings.

Clubbed together in Group 1 of the Super 8 stage, both India and West Indies aggregated over 250 runs each against Zimbabwe and consigned the ‘Chevrons’ to demoralizing defeats. However, the two teams also lost to hitherto unbeaten South Africa over the past one week, at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Currently placed second and third on the Group 1 standings, West Indies and hosts India will face each other in the final Super 8 match in a virtual quarter-final of the tournament. The match will be hosted by the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, March 1 and the action will commence from 7:00 PM IST onwards.
