In a significant development, the BCCI imposed a hefty penalty on Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 match between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, PBKS extended their dream run in the IPL 2026, securing their second consecutive win in group-stage of the competition.

Batting first, CSK posted a massive total of 209 runs, riding on a sensational half-century from young batter Ayush Mhatre. But PBKS made a mockery of the target, as captain Iyer powered them to a stunning win.

However, after the game concluded, the BCCI penalised Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

Although the pitch at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium was relatively flat, chasing a target of 210 runs was never going to be easy for the Kings against CSK's spirited bowling attack.

After Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh set the tone for a cracking run chase, Iyer did the finisher's role to perfection, amassing 50 runs off just 29 deliveries.

The PBKS captain showcased remarkable form and resilience, hammering four boundaries and three massive sixes.

Despite sustaining a hand injury in the Kings' IPL 2026 opener against Gujarat Titans, Iyer bounced back remarkably and played a pivotal role for his side.

However, after his team's thumping victory over the Super Kings, Iyer faced the BCCI's wrath, with the board sanctioning him for a Code of Conduct violation.

BCCI fines Shreyas Iyer for PBKS slow over rate vs CSK

After Punjab Kings swatted aside CSK in match 7 of the IPL 2026, the BCCI imposed a penalty of 24 lakhs on PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer.

The Punjab Kings were found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which is related to the slow over rate offence.

Therefore, Iyer, being the captain of the team, was fined 24 lakhs, while the other members of the playing XI, including the impact substitute, were penalised either six lakhs or 25 per cent of their match fees, whichever was lesser.

Notably, this is Shreyas Iyer's second consecutive slow over rate offence in the IPL 2026. The Punjab Kings captain was handed a penalty of 12 lakhs for his team's failure to complete 20 overs within the stipulated time in the previous encounter against Gujarat Titans.

However, as the IPL rule related to the over rate offences has been amended, Iyer will neither get a demerit point nor a suspension.

Talking about PBKS, the IPL 2025 season finalists have kickstarted their campaign on a bang. They have secured two consecutive victories, comfortably defeating GT and CSK in back-to-back face-offs.

Cooper Connolly has been the find of the season for PBKS, claiming the prestigious Orange Cap with 108 runs.

The likes of Iyer, Prabhsimran, Priyansh Arya and Vijaykumar Vyshak have been magnificent in their respective departments, as the Kings look determined to break their IPL title jinx this year.
