In a significant development, New Zealand Cricket has announced its initial approval for a new franchise-based T20 tournament, NZ20. The decision, described as an 'in-principle' approval, is not final but shows a clear direction for the future of T20 cricket in New Zealand.

NZC believes the new franchise model will help modernise the game, attract investment, and keep pace with global trends, where leagues like the Big Bash League have gained massive popularity.

It is important to note that the proposed league will replace the long-running Super Smash in New Zealand.

NZC moves to replace Super Smash with NZ20

NZC board chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said the move comes after extensive discussions and consultations. According to her, the board carefully evaluated multiple options, including the possibility of integrating New Zealand teams into Australia's Big Bash system.

However, the final decision favoured creating a standalone competition within New Zealand.

"There was extensive discussion on the merits of these proposals, but the Board concluded that now's the right time to revitalise our 21-year-old Super Smash competition," she said.

"This followed broad consultation, particularly within our cricket network, and careful consideration of a wide range of information and advice, including the Deloitte Report. The next steps include working with NZ20 to agree terms and seeking support from our members."

NZC backs franchise-based NZ20 league

Despite the excitement around NZ20, the move also closes the door on New Zealand’s possible involvement in the BBL, which had been considered as an alternative. This aspect has reportedly been a point of debate within NZC, especially given the growing influence of Australian cricket in the region.

It is vital to note that the likely shift to a franchise-based model represents a significant departure from the current association-based system.

Under the new structure, teams may be privately owned or operated under new commercial arrangements, similar to leagues in India (IPL) and Australia (BBL), among others.

With this change, it is expected to attract new investment and offer better marketing opportunities to cater to a wider audience.

This also makes another massive move which is it also closes the door on New Zealand's possible involvement in the BBL, which had been considered as an alternative.

This aspect has reportedly been a point of debate within NZC, especially given the growing influence of Australian cricket in the region (as per Cricbuzz).

NZ20 aims development of women' cricket

Another key aim of this NZ20 project is the development of women' cricket. NZC has made it clear that the new league must include and support a strong women's domestic T20 competition.

The aim is to ensure equal visibility and growth opportunities for women players, aligning with the board's long-term strategy.

"In particular, we want to work with NZ20 to ensure it incorporates and supports the women's domestic T20 competition, and that it maintains a level of prominence and visibility consistent with NZC's strategic commitment to the women's game," she said.

"Ensuring regional representation of NZ20 teams so fans and aspiring young cricketers can see their heroes in action is also very important to the Board, as is the question of ownership and control, including equity in the competition".

As things stand, the 'NZ20' is still in its planning stages. New Zealand Cricket will now focus on areas such as licensing, commercial partnerships, and securing support from its members.
