England’s journeyman Steffan Jones to join Mumbai Indians
Former England domestic cricketer Steffan Jones has been roped in by the Mumbai Indians franchise as their new bowling consultant for next year’s IPL 2027 season, as reported by the Times of India.
Jones, aged 52, will be expected to work with the Mumbai Indians’ development squad alongside Zubin Bharucha, who himself has joined the five-time title-winning side as its new director of performance.
It is worth noting that Jones previously served the Rajasthan Royals franchise as its fast bowling coach in the IPL 2019 season. A couple of years later for the IPL 2022 season, the former England cricketer re-joined the franchise to become its new high-performance fast bowling coach.
In the Rajasthan Royals setup, Steffan Jones worked alongside the likes of New Zealand international Trent Boult, India’s tearaway pacemen Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Sen.
The report also states that before the IPL 2027 season, Jones will also work with Indian players in the ongoing 2026-27 Indian domestic season.
What can Steffan Jones bring to the table for Mumbai Indians?
Steffan Jones, who has represented numerous English counties like Derbyshire, Kent, Somerset, Northamptonshire in England domestic cricket, played 148 first-class matches in his 14-year career between the years 1997 and 2011.
The right-arm fast bowler picked up 387 wickets in the process at an average of 36.87, and scalped another 304 wickets in 247 white-ball games (List A and T20s combined).
With his experience as a player as well as a Rajasthan Royals bowling coach, Jones could provide Mumbai Indians with valuable expertise in developing fast bowlers, particularly by helping young pacers refine their skills and adapt to the demands of T20 cricket.
In the IPL 2027 season next year, Jones will work alongside senior Mumbai Indians pacemen like Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Hardik Pandya among others.
