The India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I match at Hagley Oval saw the visitors pull off a thrilling win, courtesy of Tilak Varma’s clutch performance in the chase.

The Kiwi camp tried their best to restore balance in the match in the middle overs; however, two crucial absences with the ball made things worse for Mitchell Santner & Co.

Bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson couldn’t complete their full quotas, which eliminated two leading pace options from the playing XI.

Nevertheless, Santner, the captain, has now given a major update on why these two players were forced to stop bowling.

Mitchell Santner shares injury concern for Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson

Speaking to the media after the India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I, Mitchell Santner shared that pulling Ferguson and Henry out of their bowling routines in the match was mainly a precautionary measure.

Mitchell Santner revealed that Matt Henry developed tightness in his calf, prompting the team to avoid taking any risks given their upcoming cricket commitments.

He added that Lockie Ferguson also had to leave the field as a precautionary measure due to injury concerns.

"Yeah, Matt experienced, like, a tight calf. So, we didn't want to risk it with, you know, I guess the amount of cricket we've got coming up as well. And I think Lachie, you know, he went off as well. So, just a couple of precautionary injuries," Mitchell Santner said after the India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I match.

Will Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry play IND vs NZ 3rd T20I?

Notably, Lockie Ferguson bowled three overs in the match while giving away 37 runs. Meanwhile, Matt Henry bowled just two overs while giving away 11 runs and remaining wicketless.

Speaking of the possibility of the duo featuring in the upcoming matches, Santner didn’t rule out the possibility of minor changes and squad rotation in the remaining three T20Is.

Santner emphasised that the New Zealand management believes the duo needs to be fit for the upcoming ODI fixtures as well.

"I think it’s precautionary, and I think Lockie went off as well. So hopefully those guys scrub up okay. But I think with the quick turnarounds throughout the series and in the one-days, there could be a bit of rotation. I think that’s just what it’s going to have to be," Mitchell Santner told the media.

In case of an absence of Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson in the 3rd T20I on October 27, fast bowlers Blair Tickner and Kyle Jamieson could be suitable options.
