Mahmood Jamal served Bangladesh Cricket Board for two terms
Mahmood Jamal breathed his last in Rajshahi after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was a prominent figure in the city's sporting fraternity and dedicated more than four decades to the development and promotion of sports.
Jamal served for many years as the general secretary of the Rajshahi Divisional Sports Association. He was also an executive member of the Bangladesh Olympic Association, contributing to sports administration beyond cricket.
His association with the Bangladesh Cricket Board included two terms as a director. He was first elected to the position in 2005 and returned to the board in 2008. His work in sports administration made him a well-known name in Rajshahi's sporting circles.
Following his demise, the BCB issued a condolence message, expressing profound sadness over the loss and extending its deepest sympathies to his bereaved family and loved ones.
Mahmood Jamal faced allegations of assaulting a groundsman in 2015
Jamal's career in sports administration also came under scrutiny in October 2015, when he was accused of assaulting a groundsman at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi.
According to a report by Cricinfo published on October 25, 2015, the incident allegedly took place after the first day's play of a National Cricket League match between Rajshahi Division and Barisal Division.
Multiple sources at the ground claimed that Jamal had confronted groundsman Russell over repeated watering of the pitch. The report stated that Jamal allegedly became angry after Russell denied watering the pitch and slapped him before grabbing him by the neck.
However, accounts of the incident differed, with one source claiming that Jamal had threatened to hit the groundsman and grabbed him by the neck.
When contacted by Cricinfo at the time, Jamal said he had no recollection of such an incident. The BCB condemned the alleged conduct, with then media committee chairman Jalal Yunus stating that complaints about the pitch should have been directed to the appropriate committee rather than handled through physical confrontation.
