Joe Root Beats Harry Brook To England Cricket's Biggest Role

In a significant development, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has locked in Joe Root as their next Test captain. The Three Lions are set to ignore vice-captain Harry Brook to replace Ben Stokes, who took international retirement after New Zealand series.

Notably, England have a busy summer as they will lock horns against Pakistan for a three-match Test series starting from August 19. The ECB had a limited time to select Stokes’ successor, and went ahead with Joe Root.

Joe Root To Captain England Till Ashes 2027, Harry Brook Ignored

Notably, a report from The Athletic mentioned that Joe Root is likely to lead England till the Ashes 2027. On Thursday, the ECB released their home schedule, and the Three Lions will host Australia for the Ashes from June 18, 2027.

Interestingly, leading up to the 2027 Ashes, England have a solitary Test against Bangladesh at Lord’s. Further, the Three Lions will travel to South Africa for a three-match Test series later in the year.

Meanwhile, Harry Brook, who was the vice-captain under Ben Stokes’ leadership, has been ignored by the management for the captaincy role. Notably, Joe Root will return for his second proper stint as England Test captain.

Why Did England Ignore Harry Brook As Next England Captain?

Surprisingly, Joe Root as a captain has not achieved anything significant. If we look at his record, Root has previously led England in 65 matches, winning only 27 Tests, which is a win% of 41.53.

Ben Stokes, on the other hand, has left England with a win percentage of 54.5. The fans are wondering why didn't England go for Harry Brook, who is already leading England in ODIs and T20Is.

Notably, the ECB wants Harry Brook to focus on his white-ball captaincy because of 2027 ODI World Cup coming up. South Africa will host the prestigious event, and England eye their 2nd ODI World Cup.

Marcus Trescothick To Remain England's Head Coach For Pakistan Series

Besides the captain appointment, England are also planning to go ahead with Marcus Trescothick as the interim head coach for upcoming Pakistan Tests. Notably, Brendon McCullum was sacked from his role after embarrassing defeat against New Zealand.

The Bazball era ended recently and ECB has still not finalised a name to succedd New Zealand ace, who coached the side for over two years.

Notably, the ECB shortlisted several portfolios such as Justin Langer and Jonathan Trott. However, it seems that neither of the two is close to signing a deal. With Trescothick's extension, ECB has bought themselves time to hunt for the perfect Test head coach.

The likes of Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri were also in contention, but it seems that the ECB might go ahead with an English coach, which is why Trott seems to be the frontrunner.
