Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka is under the scanner, following his recent knee issues. When the squad for the series was named, there was an asterisk ahead of his name, denoting that his availability would be subject to fitness clearance.

The series will play a massive role in India’s future in the World Test Championship 2025-27, and captain Shubman Gill and co. would remain hopeful for his full availability. Currently, Jasprit Bumrah is at the Centre of Excellence, Bengaluru, and according to a TOI exclusive, the early signs are good for the Indian team.

Will Bumrah play the Sri Lanka Tests?

Jasprit Bumrah’s knee issues first surfaced during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, when his knee flared up. According to the aforementioned report, his knee was managed with utmost caution during the subsequent IPL season, and he was also scheduled to receive an injection.

“Selectors were thoroughly briefed. Bumrah was advised an injection by the BCCI medical team and had to rest for the next 8-10 days. The moment that period was over, he reached the CoE for assessment. He is yet to start bowling, and the management will be given a better idea in the coming days,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Notably, as things stand, he is yet to bowl at CoE, but early indications suggest he could be available for the series, joining the team directly in Galle. He is unlikely to join the squad on August 3, for their scheduled departure on August 4.

“He will start bowling from Saturday, and the picture will become much clearer when he bowls full throttle. See, it's not a batter we are dealing with. So the assessment and other protocols are different. And with Bumrah, what's the need to take any chance? There are 15 days for the Test. So, fingers crossed."

Why is Bumrah’s presence important for the Sri Lanka series?

In the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, India are halfway through their schedule. They started well with a 2-2 tie in England in 2025, which was backed up by a 2-0 series win over West Indies at home.

However, the big jolt for them came against South Africa in November 2025, when they suffered a 0-2 series loss at home. This means they have won 4 and lost 4, alongside a draw after three series played and are fifth on the WTC points table.

Jasprit Bumrah’s presence, especially in Tests, gives India a big edge over the opposition. Furthermore, India will tour New Zealand after this, before ending the cycle with a Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home — both difficult assignments. Hence, winning in Sri Lanka is a must for the Indians.

Previously, Bumrah has only played 2 Tests against Sri Lanka and picked 10 wickets at an average of 9 and the best figures of 5/24. He is the leader of the pack, and the young team would get a big mental boost from his presence.

Upon reaching Sri Lanka, India will play a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7. It will be followed by two Tests from August 15 and August 23, respectively.
