The Indian Test cricket team had to face yet another disappointing result after Shubman Gill’s failure after a DRS involving Sonal Dinusha. As the Sri Lanka team got a follow-on from India after training for 213 runs, Manav Suthar almost got the better of Kamindu Mendis, only for the celebration of the dismissal to be cut midway.
Shubman Gill & Co. celebrated joyously after they thought they had got Kamindu Mendis; however, their celebration was cut short as the appeal was denied by the on-field umpire.
Indian team stopped celebrating after a failed appeal
During the 33rd over, Manav Suthar delivered a good-length ball outside off stump, which turned back to the batter. Kamindu Mendis was beaten on the outside edge while trying to defend the ball on his back foot.
As soon as the Indian players thought that Mendis had nicked the ball, the whole team, including Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, bowler Manav Suthar, and captain Shubman Gill, made a loud appeal to the umpire. Suthar, the bowler, was seen punching the air in joy as he thought he had secured the wicket.
However, just as they were about to celebrate Mendis' wicket, with the batter himself looking disheartened, the umpire did not react to the appeal from the fielders and the bowler.

Eventually, the DRS timer ran down to zero, and Shubman Gill and Co. did not take the review, despite having three reviews remaining.

Was Kamindu Mendis actually dismissed?
Fortunately enough, Mendis was not actually dismissed. Later, replays suggested that the ball had missed the outside edge of the bat and brushed Mendis' back pad before Rishabh Pant collected it.
The ball-tracking also showed that the impact was well outside the leg stump, which would have ruled out the possibility of an LBW had India taken the review. Hence, it was a smart decision by Gill not to take the review for the Sri Lankan batter.
How Manav Suthar has been one of the finds in the Indian Test Team off late?
Recently, Manav Suthar has been one of the standout finds for the Indian cricket team. He became the first spinner and only the second Indian cricketer to take a five-wicket haul in both his first home Test and his first away Test. He has been impressing since his breakthrough in the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season.
He tore through batting line-ups as Rajasthan's leading wicket-taker that season. Suthar also earned an India A call-up for the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in 2023 and finished as the joint second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 10 scalps.
After sharpening his bowling skills with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and enjoying a successful stint with Warwickshire in the English County Championship, Suthar earned his maiden Test cap on June 6, 2026, against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. Since then, he hasn't looked back.
He has already claimed 17 wickets in Test cricket, including a six-wicket haul in Afghanistan series. In the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka Tests, he has taken 13 wickets across five innings, including a six-wicket haul, a four-wicket haul, and a three-wicket haul from the two matches played against Sri Lanka.
With his skills ready to pile on excellence, it is a possibility that Manav Suthar might be one of the best left arm spin bowling prospects for the team in Test cricket in recent times.
