In a significant development, the ICC released its annual rankings on Friday, May 1, updating the men's Test and Women's ODI team rankings.

While India claimed the third place in the annual men's Test rankings, Pakistan witnessed a promotion, overtaking Sri Lanka on the list.

The ICC updates its annual rankings based on the outcomes of matches played during a specific cricketing window.

For the 2026 annual rankings, the ICC considered the results of all Test matches played since May 1, 2025, while also factoring the outcomes of two preceding years (2024 and 2025 in this case) at 50 per cent.

India claim 3rd spot; Australia at top of the ICC annual rankings

The Indian team blew hot and cold in Tests in the aforementioned period. Since May 1, 2025, India have played 10 Tests, winning only four of them. They have lost five matches, while one of their fixtures against England concluded in a draw.

However, despite performing abysmally, India pipped England in the ICC annual rankings, as the Englishmen lost crucial weightage of results prior to 30th April 2023.

The Indian team is currently third with 104 points, while the Englishmen are claiming the fourth with 102 points.

Meanwhile, Australia finished the year as the top-ranked side in the ICC annual rankings. The Pat Cummins-led side enjoyed stellar success in Test cricket in this period, emerging victorious in ten out of twelve matches.

They lost only two games, one each to South Africa and England, so their incredible consistency helped the Aussies claim the top spot on the prestigious list.

Pakistan promoted in ICC annual rankings

Talking about Pakistan, Shan Masood and his troops have won only two out of five Tests since 2025. However, as the weightage of their series defeats against England and Bangladesh was halved, the Pakistani team surpassed Sri Lanka in the ICC annual rankings.

As things stand, Pakistan are placed below India, with defending WTC champions South Africa claiming the second position on the list.

The Proteas have been phenomenal in Test cricket since May 1 last year, winning six games, including the World Test Championship final at Lord's.

Australia dominate annual Women's ODI rankings; Pakistan hit rock bottom

Now, coming to the ICC annual rankings for women, Australia are placed first with a whopping 163 rating points. Although the England women's team has earned two rating points, it's still placed second with 128 points.

India might leapfrog the English women in the annual rankings next year, as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side is placed third with 126 points.

The South Africa women's team claims the fourth spot with 100 points, followed by New Zealand and Sri Lanka at fifth and sixth, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan women's team has been pipped by its Bangladesh counterparts. The Tigresses claim the seventh spot with 73 points, while Thailand and the Netherlands have dropped out of the annual rankings after failing to play at least 8 ODIs during the period.
