Criminal case filed against Shashank Singh [Source: X]
In a shocking turn of events, renowned Indian batter Shashank Singh landed in major legal trouble, as a criminal case was filed against him and his father, Shailesh Singh.
Shashank Singh plays for Punjab Kings in the IPL, and he had a forgettable time with the bat in the 2026 edition of the competition.
Following an abysmal IPL campaign, Shashank finds himself in hot water, as his domestic cook has filed a case against him and his father under physical assault charges.
Why was a criminal case filed against Shashank Singh?
The incident happened on Monday, June 29, as Shashank's domestic cook, Vipendra Singh Tomar, approached the police after undergoing severe physical and mental trauma caused by the cricketer and his father.
Vipendra Singh, a resident of Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, revealed that he was brought from Rewa to Bhopal through an acquaintance to work as a domestic cook at Shailesh Singh's house in Nilbad.
According to the formal complaint registered by the Ratibad police, the accused promised Vipendra a monthly salary of 15000, along with several other benefits, including free lodging and food.
He was also assured that Shailesh, who is a retired IPS officer, would help him secure a government job through his influential connections.

However, as soon as he started working at Shailesh's house, the Singh family criticised his cooking through verbal abuse.
As Vipendra made up his mind to quit the job and depart to his native town, Shashank Singh and his father allegedly beat him up and kept him captive.
Their driver was also involved in the infamous act, with the trio seizing Vipendra's mobile phone and forcing him to work at their residence against his will.
The behaviour of the father-son duo prompted their domestic cook to approach the Ratibad police station and lodge a formal complaint.
In fact, the police conducted a medical examination, concluding the victim was indeed subjected to physical assault through visible marks of bruises on his face and body.
What charges have been levelled against Shashank Singh and his father?
Based on the circumstantial evidence and the victim's statement, a criminal case was lodged at the Ratibad police station against Shashank Singh and his father, Shailesh Singh. The case was filed under three different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The father-son duo have been levelled severe charges under section 296 (B) for obscene acts and public verbal abuse against Vipendra Singh, Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing assault to the victim and Section 3(5) Joint criminal liability, which includes acts by multiple people with a common objective.
How can the legal trouble hamper Shashank Singh's IPL career?
Shashank Singh was purchased by Punjab Kings, and the franchise retained him for INR 5.5 crores ahead of the 2025 IPL auction. Despite not getting a chance to represent India, Shashank has been an integral member of the Punjab Kings setup in the last few years.
However, he endured a series of failures in the IPL 2026, as his poor fielding and inconsistent batting questioned his spot in the Punjab Kings' playing XI.
Considering he managed only 132 runs in nine innings at a modest average of 22, Shashank might not be retained by Punjab Kings for the IPL 2027.
Now, with a criminal case being filed against him, it won't be surprising if the other teams refrain from bidding for Shashank, provided he enters the mini-auction pool.
Even if Shashank is retained by Punjab Kings, his participation in the tournament will be highly doubtful unless he is acquitted by the court of all charges.
Just like how Yash Dayal missed an entire IPL season due to a sexual harassment case, Shashank's IPL journey might also be derailed if he is found guilty of the criminal act.
