Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi might be ready to take the next step in the cricket administration. Naqvi was made the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief in 2024, and since then, Pakistan cricket has been in constant turmoil.

Naqvi, apart from being the PCB chief, is also the interior minister in the Shehbaz Sharif Pakistan government, and his dual responsibilities have often clashed, causing Pakistan cricket to suffer.

Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as the Asian Cricket Council chief

Mohsin Naqvi was appointed as the chief of the Asian Cricket Council on April 3, 2025, and has had quite an interesting tenure. Under him, the Asia Cup 2025 was played right after Operation Sindoor happened, following the Pahalgam terrorist attacks.

The Indian team decided not to shake hands with Pakistani counterparts; that led to Pakistani players and even Mohsin Naqvi taking digs at the Indian team throughout the tournament. However, the height of Mohsin Naqvi’s antics came when India won the final of the Asia Cup 2025, defeating Pakistan in Dubai in September.

Naqvi came on the podium to give away the Asia Cup trophy, but the Indian team refused to take the trophy from him. This was after his reaction to Team India’s refusal to shake hands with the Pakistan team. After a long drama on the stage, Naqvi decided to take the Asia Cup trophy with him and locked it in the ACC office in Dubai while India celebrated their win without a trophy.

The trophy remains locked in the ACC office as Naqvi demands the BCCI send the Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav to Dubai and take the trophy from his hands in a function.

Claims of Mohsin Naqvi taking over as ICC chairman from Jay Shah

On March 29, 2026, a claim on social media quoted by ESPN stated that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi will take over as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chief when India’s Jay Shah’s tenure ends in 2028. As per the post on social media, Naqvi will take over from Shah in 2028 and will remain in power till 2032.

However, CREX can confirm that there is no such report by ESPN and Mohsin Naqvi can not become ICC Chair just by chance.

How are ICC chairmen appointed?

There are 108 member countries in the ICC: 96 associate members and 12 full members that participate in test matches. The ICC chooses a chairperson for a three-year term from the board of directors in order to maintain fair play and oversee the cricket-playing nations.

In addition to managing the organization's strategic direction, the Chairman is in charge of representing the ICC in international cricket forums.

It is not an easy job to be the chairman of the ICC because it demands a lot of experience and expertise in cricket administration. The ICC chairman is essential to the global expansion and advancement of cricket.

Candidates for ICC chairman usually are from the 12 full member nations, with experience in cricket administration.

Nominations are the first step in the process. A minimum of one Full Member of the ICC must nominate a candidate. Every nomination is carefully checked by the Nomination Committee to make sure the candidates fullfil all the criteria. The committee then shortlists individuals based on their credentials, background, and contributions to the sport of cricket.

A vote by the ICC Board, which is composed of representatives from each Full Member, is the last stage. Every member is able to cast one vote. A candidate must receive a simple majority of the votes in order to be elected, and voting is done by secret ballot.

A candidate is deemed the winner if they receive a majority of the votes in the first round. Further voting rounds may be held until a majority is obtained if no candidate receives a majority. Usually serving a two-year term, the chosen chairman takes office. If the chairman is re-elected in later elections, this term may be extended.
