There are very few who walk away from international cricket and begin a completely different professional sporting career. Former England World Cup winner Liam Plunkett has now done exactly that, making a surprise appearance on a professional baseball field in the United States.

The 41-year-old, who played a key role in England's historic 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup triumph, made his professional baseball debut for the Oakland Ballers on Friday.

Plunkett even celebrated the occasion with a strikeout in his very first outing, becoming one of the rare cricketers to successfully transition into professional baseball after retirement.

Plunkett's Cricket Career And Retirement

Liam Plunkett established himself as one of England's premier fast bowlers across white-ball cricket. Although injuries and inconsistency affected the early part of his international career, he reinvented himself to become one of England's most dependable middle-overs bowlers.

His biggest achievement came during England's victorious 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign.

Plunkett made his international debut in 2005 during England's tour of Pakistan. Despite showing genuine pace, recurring injuries and inconsistent form meant he drifted in and out of the national side during the following years.

His fortunes changed dramatically after 2015 when he revived his white-ball career and became an integral part of England's aggressive ODI setup.

During the 2019 World Cup, Liam Plunkett claimed 11 wickets and delivered one of the most important spells of his career in the unforgettable final against New Zealand.

His dismissals of Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls shifted the momentum towards England before the hosts lifted their maiden World Cup title.

Overall, Plunkett represented England in 13 Tests, 89 ODIs and 22 T20Is, finishing his international career with more than 130 wickets.

Plunkett’s Retirement And Transition To The Other Sport

Following England's World Cup success, Plunkett gradually fell out of the national setup before continuing domestic cricket with Surrey until 2021.

After marrying an American, he relocated to the United States, where he became actively involved in Major League Cricket as both a player and coach. Alongside coaching responsibilities, he also took up developmental roles to help expand cricket across the country.

His latest sporting adventure has now taken him from cricket grounds to baseball stadiums.

Why Did Liam Plunkett Choose Baseball After Cricket?

Plunkett's move into baseball became possible after settling permanently in the United States with his family.

The Oakland Ballers signed him under the Pioneer Baseball League's special "marketing player" rule, which allows franchises to recruit high-profile athletes from other sports for short-term appearances.

Given his background as an international fast bowler, the transition to pitching appeared a natural fit, with both disciplines demanding pace, rhythm and a powerful throwing action.

Plunkett On Baseball Debut

Reflecting on his debut, Plunkett admitted the experience caught him by surprise.

"Originally, I thought it's like the ceremonial open pitch, but it was the real thing. I was first on the mound, a little bit nervous, but the catcher was excellent."

He also revealed how satisfying it was to record a strikeout in his very first outing. "I got that strikeout. I think the hitter didn't know what was coming. I think it was a bit unusual, a mix between bowling and then pitching."

Summing up the memorable occasion, Plunkett added, "Play first game, get a strikeout. What more could I ask for? Happy days!"

His appearance also made history, as he became the first English cricketer to play professional baseball.

Cricketers Who Have Switched To Other Sports

Although Plunkett's move is unique, he is not the first cricketer to pursue another professional sporting career after leaving the game.

Andrew Flintoff pursued boxing after persistent injuries forced Flintoff to retire from international cricket. Training under former world champion Barry McGuigan, the England all-rounder made his heavyweight boxing debut in November 2012 and fulfilled a long-held ambition outside cricket.

Nathan Astle switched to Motorsport. The former New Zealand opener, who was once the holder of the fastest Test double century, retired from international cricket in 2007 before switching to Sprint Car Racing.

He competed professionally on the famous Ruapuna Speedway dirt circuit in Christchurch, pursuing his passion for motorsport.

Adam Hollioake from England switched to Mixed Martial Arts and boxing after retiring from cricket in 2004. He made his professional MMA debut at the age of 40 in 2012 before also competing as a professional boxer, eventually returning to cricket in coaching roles.

Another cricketer, Simon O'Donnell, actually began his sporting career as a professional Australian Rules footballer with St Kilda before choosing cricket.

After representing Australia and winning the 1987 World Cup, he later focused on horse racing and sports broadcasting following his retirement from cricket.

Liam Plunkett's remarkable move now joins one of the most fascinating lists of sporting career changes, proving that even after lifting a Cricket World Cup, there are still new challenges waiting beyond the boundary ropes.
